Sleepy head! I knew Gabby Agbonlahor was going to perform well. I dozed off only to put in Cahill (Everton) the following day! While the latter missed 2 glorious chances, Gabby scored one and assisted another. Tough, but also a weird week. I saw my team being inducted to the league 'x Budak-budak Ujung' only to realise the moderator kicking me out (for being too good their league, I presume) seconds later. Then, the results of QPR winning against the troubled Everton, Wolves snatching a precious victory today and not to forget, Liverpool's first win at the Emirates Stadium. As an Arsenal fan, I do want the Club to be successful. Arsene Wenger cut a frustrating figure and I started to feel sorry for him. Hope he will get a great centerback to partner the world class Verminator. Mouth watering game coming up tomorrow (Monday)

Today marked the day Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas left the club he joined as a 16-year-old. In what I call déjà vu, Fabregas is emulating former club captains Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry and William Gallas in leaving. I will not rule out the possibility of the next Arsenal captain keeping the tradition unless we revert to the old formula.

I was cheekily informed the reason Wenger was sacked by his old club Monaco was his win-the-title with-kids policy, something the gaffer was trying to do for the last six years for his current club Arsenal. Two weeks ago, he promised of a “super quality” signing, only to sign the unproven, 18-year-old winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a whopping £15 million from Southampton. Sounds familiar? Let me help you: Theo Walcott.

I would not say Theo Walcott is a world-class player. However, Wenger will right away say Walcott is still young even though he is already 22. He has been at Arsenal for five years already! Still young, you say?

Wayne Rooney, signed by arch-rivals Manchester United as a 19-year-old in 2004, is now a 25-year-old powerful striker. Some of us thought he is already 30, not because of his failed attempt to patch his balding head but because he has since scored 147 goals from 323 games for the Red Devils and winning 10 championships. Now, that is world-class and still young as well!

Wenger thinks he can win the title with kids but unless he is managing a Dutch club in the Eredivisie like Ajax Amsterdam, he can just forget it. The English Premier League is a bloody tough league. Leg-breaking finds no remorse in the hearts of players like Nigel De Jong, Ryan Shawcross and former player Roy Keane.

Wenger himself is thought to have a degree in psychology but he usually forgets, psychologically, kids still look up to elders and sometimes pee in their pants when they see players like Drogba, Vidic or Yaya Toure. Thus, Arsenal need well-respected, seasoned, quality players to lead and “protect” the group.

Oh, don’t say Sebastien Squilacci!

How I wish Jack Wilshere is 29-years old. I always see Wilshere like Rooney. He is tenacious, determined, robust and skilful too. He has shown time and time again he is no pushover off and on the pitch. Of course I am not asking Wenger to buy undisciplined yobs like Joey Barton. But a bit of Patrick Vieira would not hurt; someone that will strike fear to the opposing team. The current Arsenal team is seen to be kids, pushovers, sissies to some extent. If Jack was a bit older, I would pick him as captain.

Do you see any Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Adams or Overmars from the current team? You might think I am living in the past, but as Fabregas once said, we lack “wow” players. Sad enough, the name that has been mentioned to replace Fabregas is Jadson. I say who in the blue world is that? Why can’t it be Ribery or Juan Mata (who we missed out) or Marek Hamsik?

No wonder the players are leaving.

Clearly we need a balanced, quality team. I seriously do not know what is playing inside Wenger’s head. But what I know is bringing in experienced, quality players will restore confidence in the dressing room and fans alike.

Survey: Young Malaysians Reject Bersih Rally

Survey: Young professionals reject Bersih rally

A sample of 105 young professionals of various backgrounds aged between 24 and 34 was asked to participate in a survey of what they generally think about Bersih. There were 68 people who responded with the rest received, read and acknowledged the receipt of the survey but did not participate.

Three simple questions were asked: Firstly “What do you think of Bersih?” Next, “Do you support the cause of Bersih?” Finally, “Are you okay with street demonstrations such as the Bersih rally?”

The answers for the last two questions were compiled into a poll result. Of 68 respondents, 49% of them support the cause of Bersih and its demands with 32% rejecting and 19% feeling indifferent.

As for the question of the Bersih rally itself, a whopping 72% of the 68 respondents are against it, followed by 21% of them supporting and 7% who are indifferent.

A noble cause

Most of the respondents who support Bersih’s cause and demands claimed Bersih is a “noble cause” with “good intentions”. They mostly underlined the importance of an “electoral reform” and the timing cannot be as perfect. Some respondents of this group agree Bersih has “a fair cause” and one has pointed out “the country needs a political cleansing and it should start with the election commission”. Some participants insisted the people have “the right to demand for a free and fair election” and the government should listen to the “voice of the people”. One respondent claimed that Bersih has “revived PKR’s fortunes, dented the Prime Minister’s steady image and popularity among youth.”

“I fully support Bersih and the need to do electoral reform. I am concerned about the country's future and we need to have a consistent, independent, and trustworthy election commission. Not that I’m saying what we have now is useless. It can be improved. So, to change, we need to have fundamental change and how the Government reps are elected, and to do that we need electoral reforms; it works both ways, to the current ruling parties and oppositions.” – Respondent A.

Hijacked by the political parties

Meanwhile, some respondents who reject the cause of Bersih think it was a “desperate cause to achieve personal agenda” while another rebutted “not all the demands are valid”. Many respondents from this group have said “there are ulterior motives” in Bersih and “is politically driven” while calling it “unnecessary.” Also, most of these respondents are disappointed of how “the cause has been hijacked by political parties, mostly by Oppositions.” Some even went on to say that Bersih has been hijacked and supported by the “Anwarinas to divert the intention of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy and sex scandal cases.” One respondent is not convinced Bersih “is done by NGO”. Another partaker is “not sure about their claims” and said “certainly the opposition can win election so the level of unfairness, if any, cannot be that bad.” One clearly stated that if she were to give a harsher note, “PKR should start fair election from their own party election first.”

Malays divided

Quite a number of Malay respondents are concerned about the disunity of Malays through Bersih. One participant said “Malay against Malay. Islam gaduh sama sendiri. Kaum lain tepuk tangan” while another claimed Bersih is “breaking apart Malay/Muslim communities”. One added by saying the Malays have become the “coolies” of Bersih.

“I think we, the Malays especially are so dumb to fall into this trap. Trap not by Adil Dap etc but by foreign countries who want to destroy us. It is sad we cannot see this. Instead blame the police, blame BN etc. The only person to blame is ourselves, no one else. I’m disgusted baca status kat facebooks, especially our generation. Very ungrateful with what we have and talk like we have no values. Rather than gaduh, why dont kita semua berbaik nak amankan negara. BN is not 100% clean but so are DAP, Adil, PAs etc. Freedom of speech is good for the developed countries because of their way of thinking is way ahead of us. They criticise in positive ways but we criticise in rude ways. Look at bersih, this is the evidence.” – Respondent B.

Do not care much

For the same question, people who are indifferent about it have said they are not aware of the cause, refused to comment, “have not read the memorandum”, “do not care much”, “do not understand what Bersih is about” or simply “indifferent about the aims” of Bersih.

The only channel available

As for the question about the Bersih street demonstration, those in favour of the rally have mainly said it is “the only channel” that they can make use of to vent their anger and express their concerns. Others said that it is important to make the rest of the public “aware of the situation” and there is “nothing wrong with a rally with a positive note.” Some commentators has said that the “Government should let them walk but must ensure the security of the public.” Others were quoted saying it was the Government’s fault for “mishandling the case” that made it worse. Another agreed the Bersih rally proves that the people of Malaysia “can unite for a reason” while another, who was at the rally, claimed he “has not seen as many Chinese as before, around 30% of them.” He added, “It was the police who asked the shop-owners to close down for the day.” During a phone interview, a respondent has said “the Government should let them go on street demo”, not countering them by deploying road blocks because that will only ruin the events for the day.

“I totally understand why they wanted to walk for it. But, at the same time, the opposition is taking this as an advantage. It is a freedom of speech which i believe in it and what the goverment should have done is let them walk and just ensure the security of the public. But biasa la.. malaysia politic... byk bullshit. So at the end of the day...something that should have been a good cause ended up ugly. And the loser end is the government coz they ... SHOULD LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF THE RAKYAT.” – Respondent C

The majority says

The participants who disproved the rally have called it as “unnecessary”, “troublesome”, “chaotic”, “uncalled for”, “nuisance”, “not fun”, “should be done in moderation”, “cowardice”, “provocative”, “more harm than good”, “has off track modus operandi”, “against Malaysian culture”, “not the best approach”, “disgrace”, “embarrassing”, “waste of time”, “destroying nation’s reputation”, “deceiving”, “injects fear”, “ineffective” and “business disrupting”.

A few respondents even suggested that the Bersih rally was “funded by the oppositions” with one insisted “the orphans and the villagers were being manipulated; with RM200 being given to them to join the rally.”

Most of these respondents however support the less controversial approach; sit down and have “a top level discussion”. Since “the Yang Dipertuan Agong has somewhat acknowledged Bersih by seeing Ambiga”, Bersih should have a “roundtable discussion with Yang Dipertuan Agong, the Prime Minister and the Election Commission to resolve the matter amicably, not Ambiga-ly.”

“If it is bcoz x puas hati sbb spr, deal with spr 1st, try to use demo as last option. Bersih sendiri tau yg via demo, byk perkara boleh berlaku, so supposedly benda demo can be avoid. Instead buat cara lain, just a campaign, for everyone who support bersih, just wear yellow in one day, no matter where you are, home, office, pasar, shopping. Try to do live dialog on national TV. SPR approach that, but they don’t want still insisted to go for demo. They know the police will go for kekerasan, gas and all.So this is just a reason to show how bad is our police. Or, it’s already being manipulated by oppositions? To use this channel as their kepentingan? So it's not about bersih anymore, its more to political parties.” – Respondent E

“Due to the nature of the socioeconomic situation of the nation, the intellectual capacity for Malaysians to hold political debate as well as agenda of politicians, the protest should have not went on.” – Respondent F

“Totally against it. Menghuru harakan negara. Menyusahkan org ramai. I don’t want to get involved in this bersih stupid thingy. I just want to have a peaceful country. We live happily like family” – Respondent G

“This rally should not happened in the first place. Why PM does not want to curb this from happening? Why he does not want to have a peaceful talk with bersih? Y he does not learn from previous bersih? I believe prevention is always better than cure. Now to heal scar of the rakyat is gonna be tough.” – Respondent H

“They should meet first. Police should co-operate not oppose them. Give them designated route. 50k students can march in london, why not us? No lockdown, traffic jam a bit public transport still ok (snowstorm much worse). Support 100% if the PR didn’t hijack it. Free neutral NGO. Why teargas? Is malaysia very anarchist? dont think so” – Respondent I

Artikel ini ditulis untuk pertandingan menulis karangan di tempat penulis bekerja. Malangnya artikel ini gagal menggondol apa-apa hadiah yang berupa IPad.

Saya berpeluang untuk menggunakan perkhidmatan perbankan Islam baru-baru ini untuk membeli sebuah rumah teres dua tingkat di Shah Alam. Ketika itu bulan Disember 2010 dan saya cukup ligat mencari rumah yang sesuai lokasinya dan cantik. Al-maklumlah, dalam keadaan pasaran hartanah yang sedang hangat, saya menjadi terikut-ikut pula untuk tidak melepaskan peluang kerana fikir saya, harga rumah tidak akan turun terutamanya rumah ‘landed’.

Alhamdulillah, takdir telah ditentukan, rezeki saya ada apabila diberitahu oleh Pemaju X bahawa tiga unit masih lagi belum dijual untuk fasa yang pertama. Lantas, saya pergi ke Shah Alam dan nah, tersergam indah rumah-rumah di situ yang bercirikan moden kontemporari dengan tingkap-tingkap yang besar. Hati berdegup kuat kerana telah diberitahu harganya yang tidak lah begitu mahal. Sebelum ini saya ada pergi ke Padang Jawa untuk melihat sendiri kawasan perumahan yang berkonsep Hijau dan harga jualannya mencecah setengah juta.

“Mana-mana yang bawah setengah juta, saya akan sebat!” fikir hati kecilku. Tambahan pula, saya jatuh cinta melihat betapa cantiknya rekabentuk rumah yang di Shah Alam itu yang kini kugelarkan “Googie”.

Setelah selesai membayar yuran pendahuluan, kemudian tiba pula giliran untuk mendapatkan perkhidmatan pembiayaan perumahan. “Perbankan Islam!” kata hati saya berseloroh. Sebagai seorang Islam saya wajib mengelak bersubahat dalam riba’. Saya terus mendaftar masuk ke forum hartanah di LowYat.Net bagi mendapatkan pandangan ‘sifu-sifu’ Melayu, Cina atau India tentang pakej pembiayaan yang hebat. Seorang pengguna berketurunan Tiong Hwa berpendapat pakej terbaik ketika itu adalah “Islamic Bank MM BFR -2.4”.

Dengan semangat inkuiri yang tinggi saya terus mencari kertas-kertas projek penulisan mengenai perbankan Islam dengan tujuan memilih pakej yang manakah yang paling baik untuk saya. Lagipun saya ini sedikit ‘kiasu’ di mana saya sedikit sebanyak mempunyai sikap pantang mengalah, mahu pakej yang murah-murah dan terbaik sahaja.

Setelah memohon mengisi borang seraya bagai bersama tujuh bank, akhirnya saya telah mendapatkan perkhidmatan Bank Y. Hal ini adalah kerana “MM BFR-2.3” telah ditawarkan kepada saya. “MM” bermaksud Musharakah Mutanaqisah dan ia berdasarkan konsep Perkongsian Berkurangan (Diminishing Partnership”. Secara teorinya, konsep ini memupuk pembiayaan perumahan secara kongsi di mana sejak bermulanya perjanjian perkongsian ini, pemilik-pemilik rumah adalah pengguna (10%) dan bank (90%). Hal ini adalah kerana pengguna telah membayar 10% daripada harga asal kepada pemaju (downpayment) dan terus mendapat 10% pegangan dalam nilai rumah itu.

Secara dasarnya juga, fikir saya, dalam keadaan di mana pengguna gagal membayar ‘sewa’ dan tebusan ekuiti bulanan (melalui konsep ijarah) kepada bank, pengguna boleh menuntut sebahagian daripada ekuiti rumah atau hartanah itu. Pengguna juga tidak perlu risau kerana Musharakah Mutanaqisah memupuk semangat rakan kongsi di mana di dalam waktu pengguna susah, bank akan bantu. Setiakawan lah katakan!

Tanpa berfikir panjang atau membaca segala pelosok perkara terperinci dalam kontrak pembiayaan, dengan perasaan yakin Malaysia sebagai negara Islam yang selalu sangat menekankan soal halal haram kepada umat Islam, dengan bacaan Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, saya menurunkan tanda tangan saya yang menyerupai kapal layar zaman pemerintahan Uthmaniyah. Namun beberapa ketika kemudian, hati kecil bertanya, “di mana Aqadnya?”. Peguam kontrak pembiayaan perumahan pun dengan jelas berkata “kalau encik baca kontrak ini takut nanti tak jadi beli rumah pula”. Ah, mungkin dia bergurau sahaja, fikirku. Mana mungkin aku ditipu. Ini bukan Ah-Long Bukit Beruntung (Berugi). Bank ini tersohor.

Apabila pulang ke rumah, mulalah berfikir bukan-bukan dan kemusykilan mula timbul. Semasa menanda -tangan kontrak itu, tidak ada ustaz atau orang yang arif dalam perbankan Islam di sisi. Macam konvensional pun ada. “Mortgage Consultant” pun wanita muda, berskirt pendek berbangsa Tiong Hwa bernama Mei (bukan nama penuh). Namun aku yakin, kalau isu ubat gigi, barangan kulit atau kopitiam haram yang kononnya mengandungi bahagian khinzir pun masyarkat Malaysia sangat prihatin dan paranoid, inikan pula soal riba’ yang sangat jelas haram seperti yang diterangkan di dalam Al-Quran.

Segalanya sangat mudah. Tempoh saya mengisi borang permohonan pembiayaan sehingga mendapat kelulusan pihak atasan bank hanyalah empat hari. Oleh kerana sedikit lewat mendapatkan perkhidmatan pembiayaan, hampir setiap hari saya ‘mengasak’ pihak bank dan peguam supaya cepat memproses bayaran baki rumah itu. Dalam tempoh kurang daripada satu bulan, segalanya pun selesai. Tanggal 12 April 2011, saya telah diserahkan kunci oleh pemaju dan denda pun tidak dikenakan kerana pembayaran baki oleh bank adalah pantas.

“So far so good”.

Jam berganti jam (bukan jam Omega). Hari berganti hari. April nanti diganti Mei… Amboi, teringat pula kepada Mei, “Mortgage Consultant” saya itu! Dah lama tak dengar khabarnya. Diam-diam sahaja sejak saya turunkan tanda tangan kontrak. Harap-harap bulan Mei ini semangat setiakawan Bank Y dan saya akan terus berkekalan. Saya telah diberitahu saya akan terima surat daripada rakan kongsi saya, Bank Y tentang pembayaran ‘sewa’ dan pembelian berperingkat ekuiti rumah itu pada 1 Mei 2011. Kerana percayakan kawan, duit telah pun saya siap-siapkan dalam akaun bank saya. Surat itu pun tiba seminggu sebelum tarikh yang ditetapkan.

Tiba-tiba, saya terima surat lagi daripada rakan kongsi saya. Aih, beritahu sekali cukuplah, bro! Takkan tak percaya rakan kongsi sendiri. Namun apabila dibuka; “Ruj: Notis Debit bagi bayaran Sumbangan Takaful”. Aik, sejak bila pula saya berkelakuan sumbang apatah lagi sumbang mahram? Oh, sumbangan Takaful… tapi Takaful apa ini? Saya dah beritahu mereka awal-awal lagi dan pihak Bank Y sedar yang saya mahu mendapatkan perkhidmatan takaful di tempat saya bekerja bagi perlindungan Mortgage Reducing Term Takaful (MRTT). Pasti saya akan menyokong Takaful XYZ jika tidak hipokrit sebesar Hippopotamus lah saya! Rupa-rupanya perlindungan takaful kali ini adalah perlindungan perumahan yang rata-ratanya wajib diambil oleh peminjam. Tetapi dimanakah hak saya untuk memilih pihak pengurus takaful? Mengapa mahu paksa saya ambil perlindungan takaful dengan anak syarikat Bank Y ini?

Berbekalkan sikap husnuzon (bersangka baik), saya terus ke syarikat operator takaful itu bagi mendapatkan penjelasan. Kali pertama pergi, syarikat insurans itu terkejut dengan aduan saya kerana bagi mereka perkara ini tak seharusnya berlaku. “Mungkin cawangan bank encik ni main belasah sahaja!” Sungguh tertib dan penuh hikmah saya dilayan haritu di pusat perkhidmatan pelanggan mereka. Setelah menulis surat untuk memberhentikan polisi serta-merta dan membawa bukti saya telah mendapatkan HomeOwner Takaful oleh Takaful XYZ, tarikh 1 Mei 2011 hadir dengan pembayaran kepada Bank Y sekali dengan bayaran perlindungan perumahan sekaligus. Hati saya mula remuk dipermainkan pihak Bank Y. Adakah ini kewangan Islam yang mereka bawa? Mula-mula mereka paksa saya mengambil perkhidmatan takaful anak syarikat mereka. Kemudian, walaupun saya telah bertungkus-lumus cuba bekerjasama dengan pihak pengurus takaful atas kesilapan Bank Y, sikap Bank Y yang acuh tidak acuh untuk meletakkan sesuatu pada haknya seolah-olah telah menconteng arang ke muka agama Islam. Yang terbaru, Bank Y adalah yang paling awal menaikkan “Base Lending Rate” daripada 6.3% kepada 6.6% berkuat-kuasa 11 May 2011.

Betulkah Islamik ni?

Teringat kertas kerja tulisan tempatan “Musharakah Mutanaqisah: A Solution to Different Interpretations by Malaysian and Middle East Scholars in Islamic Financing.” Oleh Dr. Sazali Zainal Abidin, Dr. Annuar Md Nassir dan Puteri Farah Farena Khoderun dari Universiti Putra Malaysia. Ringkas hasil kerja mereka ini walaupun padat dengan informasi dan saya setuju dengan rumusan yang mereka utarakan. Para cendekiawan kewangan dari Timur Tengah telah pun berpendapat konsep Bai Bithamin Ajil (BBA) dalam pembiayaan Islam adalah sama seperti konvensional di mana riba’ atau bahasa halusnya ‘interest’ terlibat dalam pengurusan kewangan ini. Maka mereka telah menganjurkan konsep Musharakah Mutanaqisah (MM) sebagai alternatif di mana bayaran bulanan adalah jauh lebih rendah dan masih memberikan pulangan kepada bank (rakan kongsi). Tambahan pula, mereka yakin konsep MM adalah lebih baik kerana tidak bersandarkan riba’ sebagai asas pembiayaan kewangan. Ia adalah berdasarkan konsep pembiayaan ekuiti di mana bank bersama-sama membantu membeli rumah tersebut. Pembayaran bulanan adalah berdasarkan kadar sewa bulanan di kawasan rumah itu dibeli (Meera dan Razak 2005). Konsep ini telah diterima-pakai oleh sekalian umat Islam di Timur Tengah di mana hak pengguna lebih terjamin.

Persoalannya, di Malaysia ini bagaimana pula?

Rata-ratanya bank-bank ‘Islam’ di Malaysia masih menggunakan konsep Bai Bithamin Ajil (BBA) yang jelas bersandarkan riba’. Bezanya dengan konvensional cuma di dalam surat tawaran, interest akan ditetapkan mengikut kadar Base Financing Rate (BFR, tetapi cuma ubah nama daripada BLR) semasa sehingga kadar maksimum 10.5% atau 11%. Kemudian, jumlah bayaran sehingga habis hayat pembiayaan akan ditunjukkan dengan jelas, mengikut kadar maksimum tersebut. Persoalannya, kadar maksimum ‘capping’ itu tersangatlah tinggi dan sepanjang Malaysia ini bertapak di bumi, kadar BLR tertinggi direkodkan adalah 10.5% pada tahun 1998, sama dengan capping tersebut. Jadi, apa gunanya? Bagi saya, konsep BBA cumalah mimikan konsep bank konvensional. Nasihat saya, jika pun ada bank yang menawarkan kadar interest yang tetap (fixed-interst loan), biasanya dalam 8%, jangan terlampau yakin tawaran itu adalah yang terbaik. Mereka ini jauh lebih licik daripada yang anda sangkakan.

Jadi, bagaimana dengan Musharakah Mutanaqisah (MM) di Malaysia? Secara teorinya, MM adalah perkhidmatan pembiayaan kewangan yang halal. Berani saya bercakap begitu kerana konsep pembiayaan bersandarkan ekuiti mudharabah adalah halal di sisi agama. Namun, bank-bank di Malaysia tidak mengikut sepenuhnya teori Musharakah Mutanaqisah. Tambahan pula, hanya dua bank tempatan sahaja yang menawarkan konsep MM kepada masyarakat Islam atau bukan Islam di Malaysia ini. Jelas sekali, mereka hanyalah mahu mengaut keuntungan dan tidak mahu ambil risiko ‘membantu’ pelanggan. Selama ini pun bank-bank bukanlah berniat mahu membantu masyarakat. Seperti mana syarikat-syarikat yang lain, mereka cuma mahukan keuntungan yang maksimum. Membantu masyarakat adalah tanggungjawab kerajaan, fikir mereka. Walaupun Bank Y dan Bank Z ada menyediakan pembiayaan menggunakan konsep MM, saya tidak yakin mereka mengikut segala peraturan yang ada di dalamnya. Sebagai contohnya, kontrak persetujuan antara Bank Y dan saya telah dijelaskan oleh peguam sama sahaja dengan BBA di mana saya layak duduk di rumah itu tetapi jika saya gagal membayar balik duit pinjaman itu, maka rumah akan di sita dan dilelong. Bagaimana dengan minimum 10% pegangan saya di dalam nilai pasaran rumah itu? Bank biasanya akan ‘melelong’ rumah itu dan berharap akan mendapatkan harga pasaran untuk rumah itu, setinggi yang mungkin. Untung di situ segalanya milik bank. Bukankah mereka cuma mahukan bayaran prinsipal apabila kontrak itu dibuat? Jika buat untung sekalipun, pegangan ekuiti saya bagaimana? Dapatkah tidak? Lagi satu, bukankah pelanggan mempunyai hak untuk jual rumah itu dahulu sebelum rumah itu disita? Hasil keuntungan itu boleh lah pelanggan bayar baki hutang kepada bank. Tambahan lagi, jika saya terlambat satu hari sahajapun untuk bayaran bulanan kepada bank, mengapa perlu begitu rakus memaksa saya bayar denda kerana lambat? Nasib baik Bank Y menawarkan perkhidmatan pembayaran automatik ‘standing order’. Itupun saya dicas RM1.00 untuk perkhidmatan itu.

Yang paling utama sekali, bank-bank yang menawarkan pembiayaan menggunakan konsep Musharakah Mutanaqisah di Malaysia kadaran bayaran bulanannya masih berlandaskan BFR atau nama bukan Islamnya, BLR. Tidak ada bank yang menawarkan kadar ‘sewa’ bulanan yang berkonsep ‘ijarah’ berdasarkan kadar sewasa semasa di sesuatu kawasan tersebut di mana itulah yang paling adil untuk para pengguna. Jika Negara-negara Arab berjaya mengadaptasikan cara ini di sana, mengapa di sini tidak boleh?

Adakah wang mengatasi segala-galanya?

“For them to change, I must change.” Untuk mengubah, kita harus berubah dahulu. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) harus mengambil langkah awal dengan mengasingkan diri daripada perniagaan berlandaskan riba’. Fikirlah, jika BNM 100% komited untuk perbankan secara Islam dan memperbaiki struktur kewangan Malaysia, saya yakin hak pengguna akan terus terpelihara. Para pengguna pun tidak lagi merasakan bank-bank ini hanyalah Ah-Long berlesen. Saya ini bukanlah hanya bercakap dari sudut pandangan seorang pengguna sahaja. Jika pihak bank takut untuk mengalami kerugian akibat risiko yang sangat tinggi maka haruslah mereka tidak lagi memberi pinjaman kepada pembeli sewenang-wenangnya. Pemuda-pemudi kini ada yang jatuh muflis gara-gara kerakusan bank-bank Islam atau konvensional ‘menjual’ perkhidmatan kad kredit. Ada juga kisah di mana pembeli rumah Berjaya mendapat pembiayaan walaupun jumlah tanggungan hutang kini mencecah 60% gaji kasar. Haruskah kita lupa kepada isu ‘sub-prime crisis’ di Amerika Syarikat. Banyak bank yang lingkup kerana ramainya pengguna yang gagal melangsaikan hutang. Jika ada penyiasatan kredit yang tegas, maka tidak ada lagi pengguna-pengguna yang gagal mematuhi perjanjian dengan bank. Ini baru lah Islamik!

Bank tidak seharusnya tamak dalam pengurusan mereka. Jualan yang banyak tidak semestinya menjanjikan keuntungan yang baik apatah lagi halal. Saya yakin jika Bank Negara tolak sistem kewangan konvensional dan menerima pakai konsep kewangan Islam yang betul-betul Islam, bukan hanya tukar nama sahaja, hak pengguna dan bank akan terjaga dan tidak ada lagi jualan yang berlandaskan riba’. Jangan kata orang Islam, orang bukan Islam pun juga akan bersama-sama menyokong sistem kewangan yang halal ini kerana hak mereka lebih terjaga.
Percayalah, jika kita berjaya melaksanakan sistem kewangan Islam yang benar-benar Islam, kebenaran dan keadilan dalam Islam akan terserlah di seluruh pelusuk dunia. Janganlah jadikan alasan bahawa sistem kewangan Islam yang sedia ada ini adalah suatu titik permulaan yang baik walaupun tidak lari dari riba’.

Matlamat tidak menghalalkan cara.

Makan angin, YB?

Sudah lama agaknya tidak menulis dalam Bahasa Malaysia. Terpanggil pula untuk mengarang dalam bahasa tercinta ini. Almaklumlah, sudah agak lama berjauhan dari negara kelahiran. Lagipun elok juga berlatih menulis dalam bahasa ibunda ini agar tidak kekok apabila pulang ke tanah air nanti.

Saya baru-baru ini telah menerima sepotong undangan melalui kiriman e-mel ke Perasmian 'Friends of Pakatan Rakyat'. Bulat-bulat saya sudah tolak pelawaan itu. Bukanlah apa, sekadar mengingatkan diri agar tidak menyebelahi mana-mana parti politik dalam waktu ini. Teringat juga ketika dahulunya saya dijemput bermain pertandingan bola sepak dan berkali-kali saya memberitahu pihak UMNO London supaya tidak mempolitikkan sukan. Dalam masa yang sama, semua rakyat Malaysia di kota si hidung tinggi berkaki panjang ini akan lebih berminat untuk bermain tanpa dicop 'orang UMNO'.

Saya ada bertanyakan saudari Nurul Izzah secara sinis adakah Parti Keadilan Rakyat kini sudah begitu kaya sampaikan program ini perlu dianjurkan di dunia asing ini? Beliau begitu cepat membalas secara 'defensive', bak kata orang putih, dengan menyatakan 'tiada siapa yang paksa saya hadir ke majlis itu'. Sabar-sabar lah kakak oi! Baru dicuit sedikit, terus mahu melatah? Saya ini bukan siapa-siapa pun. Cuma seorang rakyat Malaysia yang risau jika gelombang baru ini kini mahu mengikuti perangai gelombang lama pula.

Lagipun kami di sini tidak mengundi pun. Malah, kami tidak membayar cukai kepada kerajaan Malaysia pun. Yang bekerja di sini, tidak boleh mengundi pun.

Jadi, saya cuma nak tahu. Adakah berbaloi kehadiran para Yang Berhormat di sini untuk rakyat di Malaysia? Bukannya saya nak halang. Cuma takut-takut perangai suka jalan-jalan makan angin 'oversea' ini menyelinap masuk pula dalam badan 'suci dan murni, nyah korupsi' tuan-tuan dan puan-puan pula.

Dahulu bukan main mengutuk gelombang lama suka berjalan makan angin pakai duit rakyat, membeli-belah Dolce Gabbana, Gucci atau Prada. Kumpulan berbadan tegap berkaca mata hitam kiri dan kanan pun mendapat saguhati masing-masing seperti topi GAP. Walaupun murah di waktu 'Summer Sale' ini, janji GAP, bukan GAGAP buatan Indonesia. Tetapi selalu sangat gelombang baru ini hadir di sini. Apakah tujuan sebenarnya?

Macam saya cakap, bukannya tak bagi... Tapi cerita-lah supaya rakyat yang mahu keadilan dan perubahan ini tahu yang gelombang baru ini bukannya dua kali lima. Apabila ditanya, yang mampu dijawab ialah "apa jawapan sekalipun nampaknya tak memadai untuk saudara. Tentunya banyak lagi yg dirancang".

Mengapa begitu 'defensive'? Apa yang mahu disorokkan? Saya ini bukanlah seorang ahli SB, PERKASA atau UMNO. Walaupun nama ayah saya Abu Hassan, tetapi beliau bukanlah bekas Menteri Besar Selangor. Jika rakyat tanya soalan yang susah-susah sedikit, cepat pula melatah dan ada menganggap kami ini 'khadam' atau penyokong UMNO pula. Habis tu, takkan nak setuju sahaja dengan gelombang baru ini seperti sang memerang dungu?

Sambil menyelam, minumlah air. Ya, seperti seekor memerang!

Jikalau hadir semata-mata kerana 'Friends of Pakatan Rakyat' yang bakal dirasmikan di kota yang gah, hebat, penuh riang-ria London ini, maka apakah faedah kepada rakyat di Malaysia yang membayar zakat, cukai dan mengundi? Apakah 'Greater Kuala Lumpur' tidak cukup hebat seperti 'Greater London' yang sebenarnya agak 'dodgy'?

Setakat detik ketika ini, YB Nurul Izzah masih gagal menjawab soalan ikhlas saya di Twitter.

RPK not in Trinity Court

I was actually really looking forward for that colourful Saturday with a total of four events about to fill in the life of a bachelor in London. The day literally kicked off with some kick abouts in Hyde Park with the guys and after wiping off perspiration left and right (and underneath), I rushed to the BPP Law School in Holborn for the Raja Petra Kamarudin's talk.

I had about half-a-dozen questions to ask him. I have been critical about his controversial, tabloid-like articles in this blog but was ready to hear what he was going to say with an open mind. RPK, together with his wife and beautiful daughter Nabila (not her real name) was greeting the guests outside as I managed to creep into the packed hall under the watchful eye of three or four bodyguards.

The session started with a video footage of RPK's wife about to receive RPK from his ISA release but it was cut short so that the man of the day could start his eagerly waited speech. He did not start well in my opinion, since he was only repeating whatever you can find in his blog regarding his detention and all. I was not impressed myself as I wanted to hear something new, something inspiring and neutral. However, the first part of the talk had a turn of event with a question that stunned most of the crowd who were his hardcore fans.

"What is the 'difference' between you and Anwar who chose to stay in Malaysia to face the trial but you... are here?"

Okay. That should balance the atmosphere a bit. After a lenghty explanation, RPK insisted that he only wanted a fair trial where the late Augustine Paul should not be in the team of judges. He also added he was actually inspired by Sun Tzu to bring the 'enemies' into his own territory, to have a fair trial here in the UK.

However, I am more of a Malay than a Sun Tzu follower that I still believe in 'berani kerana benar'. Saying that though, I am quite sceptical about Malaysian judiciary independence in which I wholly understand why the seasoned man is running away. Come on, the man has gone through ISA twice now and he is not even a communist. (the reason why ISA was established by the late Tun Abdul Razak is to fight terrorism, communism).

But still, my stand is forever like this: You can say and write whatever you want but you must be responsible for them. You should at least include some references especially when your blog hits is like half a million a month! And don't make me start on cowardly acts of anonymity like Kelantanese 'Abdul Noni bin Mus' on this blog. If you want to say something, just say it. Be brave. Stand up and speak up. But take full responsibility for whatever that you have said.

Then the Q&A received quite a blow by hardcore commentaries (instead of asking RPK a question) with one even accusing the Malaysian government of targeting his long troubled son. But I must say, RPK did well to end the session, at least for the neutrals. He reiterated his desire to witness Malaysia achieve great things with an efficient check and balance system. He recalled how he lost a lot of followers because of his suggestion of a unity government after March 2008.

"I was even called a Trojan horse sent by UMNO!" RPK claimed. In my opinion, those followers merely do not understand the concept of unity government, something that we have now in the UK when the Conservatives clinched a deal with the Liberal Democrats to form a coalition in order to be a more stable government. David Cameron (Conservatives) is the new Prime Minister of United Kingdon and Nick Clegg (Liberal Democrats) is his deputy.

"What's wrong with having a BN Prime Minister and a PR Deputy Prime Minister? (vice versa). No one should be given absolute power. If Pakatan were to take over in March 2008, (I fear) it could have been even worse for Malaysia!" RPK said, reaffirming his dream for a more independent, balanced Malaysia. I wanted to give RPK a monkey jump-clap like the one the hardcore 'uncre' (uncle) in front of me gave earlier but lets not spoil the moment shall we?

Finally, RPK has shown the neutral side of him since the first half of the session was more one sided. All the half dozen of questions I wanted to ask him were answered without me having to put up my hand and ask. That was the moment I was waiting for and I finally sincerely gave him a round of applause as the session ended.

All in all it was a time well spent. To be honest, I was quite disappointed with the crowd since only about 10% of them were Malays and most being hardcore partisan. I still do not approve RPK though for some of his writings which are more coffee shop chat or Mastika-like tales than credible information (the statutory declaration he made for example). I am still sticking to my stand that ISA should not be abolished but rather amended to only detain terrorists by specifically mentioning the terms of practice.

However, I respect RPK for his bravery and vision. Plus, he is still trying his best to be as impartial as possible even if he was misunderstood and mistreated by one side. In fact, he is not affiliated with any political parties although there is a question mark over his financial backers.

Uncle Pet(ra), do you mind telling us who they are?

Zaid for Hulu Selangor?

I have had enough hoping for a stronger Opposition coalition when PKR, with the likes of supreme leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim making serious blunders and bloopers by slapping his own face yet again. To add insult to the wound when a handful of PKR leaders left the party, the rakyat are given another false hope that Pakatan Rakyat will seriously focus on the needs of the rakyat under the "Ketuanan Rakyat" agenda propagated by the coalition.

With Zaid Ibrahim chosen as PKR's candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election, it has given an impression that he was actually handpicked by Anwar himself so that the Opposition coalition will have a stronger and bolder voice in the Parliament from someone who was a former Minister with vast experience inside UMNO. PKR Vice President Azmin Ali is rumoured to be fuming over the suggestion that Zaid will succeed Anwar at the highest party level if not Pakatan as Zaid's more liberal minded way of thinking suits the spirit of Pakatan Rakyat. Sadly, the Hulu Selangor by-election has become what we call just a mere passage for them to achieve this.

If Anwar does care about the rakyat, a local from Hulu Selangor should be chosen instead. Or atleast someone who genuinely cares about the Hulu Selangor constituents. Not another parachute candidate!

I have nothing personal against Zaid despite him blocking me on Twitter for no apparent reason. The main reason I 'follow' Malaysian leaders on Twitter is surely NOT because I am submissive or blindly agreeing to them like they are gods and titans. I follow them on Twitter because I want to know them better before passing judgment. Most people judge people even before really knowing that person but you are what you say. It's as simple as that. The way you handle Twitters from your own hardcore fans, your counterparts, your haters, your elders... you are what you say.

For Zaid's case, clearly he is not a man of his word. He talks about freedom of speech, but he is unwilling to hear criticisms from the people. Old UMNO habits die hard? I was only debating the dual legal system that still exists in Malaysia with my mate by mentioning him and the next thing I know, I was blocked. Other leaders that I also had a healthy debate with like Tengku Razaleigh and Anwar Ibrahim, ended up following me instead! Yes, a little brat nobody who is supposed to be studying rather than writing this article, me.

The things you learn from Twitter.

So, that is just how much I know Zaid Ibrahim. Not much but tells a lot. I don't care if he drinks, gambles, womanises eventhough he admits to one of them. What is more important for me is that leaders should run far far away from lying to the face of the rakyat and becoming hypocrites. Yes, not just Zaid but everyone. Absolute equality, absolute democracy?

I simply laughed at the hypocritical idea of having seperate coaches for men and women for KTMB trains. It is an insult to the species called 'men' implying as if we are all super randy bunch of people. Having said that, if the 'women' have now conceded that we 'men' are ALL gatal people, why can't they accept the practice of polygamy by we gatal men wholeheartedly?

The person who came out with the idea also clearly stated that it is a way to promote 'gender EQUALITY'. For me, this phrase is loosely used and somewhat misleading. There can never be such absolute equality between men and women. We are indeed different afterall. If absolute equality is what these women asked for, there should not be the practice of 'ladies first' anymore. Then, the women should be talked to like how I talk to my guy friends, making vulgar jokes at the same time. There shouldn't be such thing as a direct retaliation by buliding girls schools. London 2012 100-meter Olympics sprint, body-building, weight-lifting should then be made unisex, etc.

Men should then have an equal opportunity to be bikini models.

Yuck!

For me, the men will have their fair share of opportunities and rights based on their needs and capabilities. Same goes to the women. Not many, if not none of the women would like to be 'firewomen' or 'lumberjanes'.

There can also never be absolute equal opportunities between the rich and the poor. This is common sense. In fact, the rich should be taxed more in order to help the poor. Having said that, the poor should be groomed to be the rich not just simply giving them the goodies to be enjoyed for a short term only.

"Teach the poor how to catch fish, not just give them fish."

So what about democracy? Should there be an absolute demoracy in every parts of the world as propogated by the Americans?

I remember Big Mike from last week's American Idol. After about 35 million votes and he was the bottom of the pile, despite giving his 'best performance ever so far' the day before. If it wasn't for the more dictatorhip-style of the judges giving Big Mike another chance, American Idol, a singing competition, will be on par with Akademi Fantasia Season 3 where the guy with a mediocre voice won.

This is the flaw of democracy. You simply cannot do democracy all the time. If democracy is the only way, why didn't the Prophets Moses and Muhammad follow the voice of the majority during that time?

However you choose the leaders, the most important part is to know how just the leaders are to the people.

But remember, this is about nation governing, not your petty popularity contest!

I have been itching to write for weeks now but I only decided to do it this morning. It was kind of weird to wake up and suddenly had some ideas popping up like the malware XP Security 2010 that infected the company's laptop couple of weeks ago. I still cannot believe I fell victim to a spyware/phishing scam. I know High Speed Broadband (HSBB) is in Malaysia now but please, 'surf the channel' with care. Fast internet? Now I have another excuse to go back for good!

Speaking of going back, a friend who is an ADUN wrote about why Malays work overseas. Although indirectly, in that article, maybe he was trying to shift the blame to the 'old' New Economic Policy (NEP) founded by Malaysia's Prime Minister's father who himself has now replaced it with New Economic Model (NEM). My logical thought would be the reason why these Malays are here at the first place is because of NEP, if you define NEP as the government giving scholarships to these Malays (including me) through MARA convertible loans, Public Service Department scholarships and other Government-linked companies like PNB, Petronas, Telekom and TNB. I did point out to the ADUN friend that most of us here are for the money and that is the obvious reason people are in denial about. You cannot blame us for being a bit ambitious and greedy when the exchange rate permits us to earn a lot more. Sadly, this main reason was not included in his article and that is simply... the truth.

Of course there are other reasons for Malaysians (not just the Malays) to flee Malaysia for example racial discrimination, freedom to express, political powers trying to put their "Yes, sir!" players in various government agencies and even universities, better qualification, quality of education, laid back working culture and personal/family problems. However, lets be honest, money is still the main factor for this case. You don't have to pretend you are not after the money. Have some class, please! The Pound Sterling has gone down now like a falcon diving to its prey and Malaysians in London are like, 'aiyoh, matilah macam ni!'.

I haven't got the chance to read the hundreds pages long of the New Economic Model, but on the surface it looks good. To be honest, in principle, NEP still looks good to me - eradicating the poor not based on racial grounds. I guess what some people are angry about NEP is how the leaders implemented NEP - targeting the Malays/Bumiputras in most cases. I have heard things like, "you got this scholarship because you are a Malay" or "I want to groom you to be my successor because you are a Malay" or "the project is given to you because your company is a Malay company" and I will be insulted if I got these remarks. Since I was a MARA scholar (I love you, MARA) to do my Masters here in London, I was competing with other creme de la creme of Bumiputras/Malays. So the question of if I am a Malay for this case should not arise. However those remarks do happen. And of course surely this will breed racism.

My first thought on the NEM was how the Prime Minister can actually deal with the 'ultra Malays' in the likes of PERKASA or even some within UMNO. NEM approach is more towards needs based rather than racial based as NEP is perceived and for that I give my two thumbs up. The fact of the matter is, there are still more of poor Bumiputras (Malays, Ibans, Kadazans, Muruts, Orang Asli etc) compared to the Chinese so I do not understand why PERKASA should make a big deal out of it (and uttering dirty words during interviews at the same time). On the other hand, please, do not be angry or jealous if the Bumiputras and Indians are seen to be preferred still because everyone should know we have the responsibility to help the poor. Please have the spirit of helping people not based on colour. Poor people can be from the Chinese too and poor people here are mostly 'Orang Putih pujaan wanita Malaysia'... I am just pulling your legs ladies you know I love you.

Okay I know PERKASA talks about the protecting 'Bumiputra Rights' as enshrined in the Constitution. Let me tell you no one is going to take that away from you at the moment because Pakatan Rakyat clearly stated it in their Common Policy Framework-under-progress that it will be based on the Federal Constitution (Bumiputra rights, Islam as the national religion, Bahasa as national language etc). The Chinese you accused of 'taking over' in the 13th General Election also have the Article 153 in the Chinese-dominant party policy like DAP as claimed by Encik Tony Pua via his Twitter (and accusing me of reading Utusan only at the same time). The question is though, what is 'Bumiputra rights'?

I did ask DAP leaders Encik Lim Kit Siang and Encik Tony Pua (since the latter claimed, I quote "your 153" is in his party's policy) what is their interpretation of 'Special Bumiputra rights'. What are these rights? Both however, did not answer despite asking them three times politely! Maybe it was such a hard question for Non-Bumi dominant party leaders like DAP that they refused to answer.

I myself do not have the answer. I am not going to ask the same question to the UMNO leaders because their answer will turn out to be the obvious. But I am not generalising. Some may have different perspective regarding Article 153. I do want to make my own interpretation however. When we talk about safeguarding the rights of the indigenous people under Article 153 I will start to imagine the plight of the Red Indians in the States, the Africans of the then Apartheid South Africa and the aborigines/Torres Strait Islanders of Australia. In a way, Article 153 should be seen as a priority measure to keep the original people's identity, customs, possessions and general happiness in tact. Oh now please, I am NOT saying the rest are 'pendatang' and should be sent out of the country. Their identity should be protected too. But ultimately, we do not want Malaysia to be perceived as 'Little China' like Singapore or second, crazier England like the States while the minority or the original people will somehow lose their centuries old identities.

What makes Malaysia great is that we are allowed to keep our various identities of all different races and religions under one roof. Plus, everyone should live in harmony and respect each other. They should not see a Malay blogger as a racist UMNO cyber trooper who reads Utusan only, a Chinese who is always a rich towkeh and cheat people money, an Indian who only can cook curry and poor, a Sikh who must only don the turban (when you know the women must not) or Sabahans and Sarawakans live in the jungle. They should really know and respect each other. Even wearing the non-type traditional costumes wouldn't hurt but cool! People go to the same one school... This is what I call the ultimate Malaysian dream.

Speaking of identity, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was given the acid 1Malaysia test by Encik Lim Kit Siang by asking him if he is a Malay first or a Malaysian first. If you read the concept of 1Malaysia properly, people should see themselves as Malaysians first. I know our DPM is only safeguarding the Malay support that he has via UMNO, but if you ask me if I am a Malaysian first, I will say no. I am indeed a Muslim first and the rest like being a Malay, Malaysian, Arsenal fan, KL-Selangor born and bred, rock star wannabe will only come second, and will always be. No, I am not a kopiah wearing, 'holier than thou' kind of guy but I strictly believe Islam covers everything that is inside the world and also the afterlife so that is why I should be Muslim first.

I don't know about you guys but this is not about me. I am just a skinny guy trying to make a living (famous tagline in KMYS). The point I am making is that it is okay to be what you want to be and to keep your identity however you like. It does not necessarily have to be which one is first, or second, or last. It's your choice, really.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to also send the words of comfort and condolences to the families of Sibu MP Datuk Robert Lau and Hulu Langat MP Datuk Dr. Zainal and I hope the leaders from both factions don't get too excited about the upcoming by-elections when it is really a time for us to mourn or atleast say some prayers.

Is Nizar the One

Knowing I was going to be late, I was literally striding like an Olympian to the Pippard Lecture theatre, Imperial College to hear ex-Chief Minister of Perak, Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin. However, I guess I have to get used to YBs turning up late these days, previous experience with the Seri Setia ADUN has somewhat supported this trend. Nizar was like 45 minutes late and during that time, I managed to turn my little town into a 1,000,000 populated megacity (Simcity lah!), finished off yesterday's leftover and chatted with an ACCA girl who is an avid fan of Malaysian politics.

Finally, I could see Nizar being greeted and welcomed by enthusiasts and me, wanting to keep myself calm and composed shook his hands and he asked me if I was a student here. Yes, someone thinks I look young! I'm still getting used to the fact that people do grow old and this guy here just gave me the greatest compliment I could have asked for during my torrid time as an under worked analyst in London. So far so good.

Nizar started off apolitically by reciting the verses from the Quraan, since the crowd being mostly of non-Muslims. He referred to the verse telling us not to conceal the truth and another one about loving one another of different races (Quraan 49:13). He then gave the typical greetings to the members of the floor in four different languages (Arab, English, Mandarin (I think) and Tamil) and so, the political talk has officially begun! He should have just used the Arab version "Assalaamualaikum" to everyone me thinks.

I am not going into acute details about the things he mentioned because he was basically repeating himself (just like Zambry the last time) and you can find them in blogs and alternative news portals. However, I will point out the fun, crazy, unusual things from the talk. For a start, when he was elaborating on the Perak issue yada-yada-yada, I may be the only one from the audience who realised he gave us the middle finger each time he was adjusting his spectacles! I kid you not and I'm not writing to sensationalise! I almost exploded with laughter when people were like so serious listening to the usual bits, Nizar, quite innocently and unintentionally was giving it, WWE The Rock style. LOL.

Okay okay maybe I needed to concentrate more. I wanted to see if the Facebook quiz "Which Malaysian Leader are You?" was accurate with my result being "Datuk Seri Nizar". First thing that I learned about this guy was that he is not a lembik puppet as many anti-Pakatan people perceive. The other day Anwar Ibrahim also had a talk in London and he hypocritically quoted "I may have a bad back, but I have a backbone!" but for Nizar's case, he did really seemed to be one firm leader with a massive backbone! His arguments were strong, bold and honest. He even answered my simple but tricky question quite well by stating how he is strongly against the act of 'froggies', more formally 'party defection'. "It is an act of betrayal to the people!". Some Pakatan leaders are calling these defectors names (frogs, kataks, traitors, shi-oots who only help cleanse the party) but at the same time defending the Westminister-style Constitution that allows ship-jumping and endorsing and agreeing to the failed 16th Sept 2008 party deception (not defection) when asked. That's no backbone if you ask me and there was no evidence at that time that I could find Nizar being in support of party defections even from the Bota ADUN's (I used to be playing football with his kids) double-jump ship as all I could remember was Anwar, Anwar and Anwar being on the ADUN's side.

Sure or not, Jeg? Unfortunately, Nizar has forgotten that he himself welcomed the Bota ADUN to PKR and claimed there were three more UMNO men jumping into the Perak coalition in 2009. "They came forward to us without us inviting them."

Well, you could have said "No, it is an act of betrayal to the people! Go away!"

At least for strongly against the principles of party crossover even if it was constitutional, Karpal Singh and I have got the rights to condemn these defectors. Pot calling the kettle... Made in China? (I need to avoid being anti-Afro and support China products by not using the standard version of the idiom).

"Harus bertaubat!"

Okay now, we all now know Nizar is not a DAP's puppet, evidently from his track record, helping people not based on colour or religion. We know he is a qualified engineer and was English educated (Aston University, Birmingham). He is quite new in politics and one guy asked why did he enter politics. "Because I see there is some injustice and I feel I need to correct this." He is also a religious man with a multi-ethnic background (father is Malay, mother is Chinese). He is quite a strong, firm leader as we all know with a bit sense of humour. His economics agenda and willingness to work with the current Perak government seem like a good idea. What else did I miss?

Well, being quite a particular kind of guy, I did not find that many faults in his speech compared to Anwar's couple of days earlier. I think he did quite well apart from being hypocritical about party defections and Zambry bashing. However, there is only ONE and only ONE part that I could not absorb. I still think it's a minor issue but it is worth mentioning here just to provoke the minds of you guys. He started his speech by quoting the verse of the Quraan clearly reminding us not to conceal the truth. Towards the end of his talk, Nizar said:

"For whatever reasons you read on the blogs, regarding why the Sultan has not dissolve the State Assembly, despite what the Sultan himself wrote in his book, don't believe them!"

"Maybe the Perak Sultan wants to protect his business?" asked an Ah Pek.

"The reason is far more beyond that. The Sultan already has everything under the sun. Like I said, don't believe whatever you read on the blogs regarding this."

I was dumbfounded myself. Nizar was not telling. He gave the impression he knew the reason. Why is he now concealing the truth?

I want to know the reason! Help!!! If you are reading this, Datuk Seri, please get me out of this niggling misery. Look for me on Facebook and Twitter and tell me the reason in private message. I swear I will not tell a soul!

Maybe it's just mind games. Politicians...

Imperial College Malaysian Night 2010

1. It was a last minute decision to have finally gone to a Malaysian Night for years already. The last time I went, Iedil was still around, entertaining us with his spontaneous acts on stage in the UCL Malaysian Night, never failed to make an old man smile.

2. I really think the Imperial College Malaysian boys and girls did a great job. Very talented people. I was sceptical at first but along the way, they finally made this old man smile.

3. The title was Born to be Vile and the only song that I thought could be associated with it was "Born to be Wild" by Steppin Wolf... and I was right, that song did come out during the interval, and it made this old man smile.

4. All in all, it was a good performance. Singaporean diss was a classic, but received some boos from a section of Singaporean friends. 3.5 stars out of 5. That's good from a grumpy old man me.

5. However, I did notice the number of Chinese Malaysians performing is far greater than other Malaysians. I could only count 3 Malays and 3 Indians (one was really funny imitating Karam Singh Walia). My thought on this is fair because I assume it is due to Imperial College having more Chinese Malaysians than other Malaysians for their Undergraduate Programmes.

6. I might be wrong. Any Imperial College students want to object please do.

7. However, sadly, all good things must have a flaw... and this flaw I'm about to tell you spoilt everything that night (apart from Aaron Ramsey's horrific injury).

8. It was during an interval, a local British lady was asking her Malaysian Chinese friend a simple question. "Why are they all Chinese?" Like me, she was just curious of the number of Malaysian Chinese overpowering other Malaysians like Malays, Indians, Kadazans, Muruts and Ibans.

9. Her Malaysian friend simply said spontaneously, "Because they can speak English".

10. I was shocked; I looked at him, and quickly turned away. I still cannot understand there are still Malaysians out there even in the UK, even during this harmonious Malaysian Night, could be belittling other races.

11. I didn't want to make a scene that night by confronting that boy who clearly has issues with Non-Chinese. It would be a big scene since I am a Non-Chinese and my words can be very hurtful to the core for the racists.

12. I wanted to clarify to the British lady who was misinformed. However I think she is not that naive to know other Malaysians can speak English as well, like the Indian girl who was playing the daughter of the detective and the Malay Datin Kelentong.

Babi Biru Terbang

Warning: this article will get heavier and heavier as it goes along the way. Hardcores, look away now.

Many months back, the nation was rocked by a circulated picture of a tudung-clad Muslim girl holding a piglet. It turned out that she is a Vet and was doing some research for her project. It has caused some stir among the Malaysian Muslims and there were some angry quarters accusing her of ridiculing Islam. Then, there were pictures of a group of Muslimah students holding and caressing dogs and yes, they were also wearing tudung...

What???!

As usual, many Malaysians are that easy to be agitated. They are also good at making comments without doing enough research for a particular issue. They say things they do not have knowledge of. Their aim is to gain support of the masses and to be famous because they will be perceived as unique, different and great. Heck, they sometimes don't even know what they are talking about and simply agree and spread the words of some so called great leaders, politicians, ustazs, priests, monks, lawyers, actuaries, syeikhs, Al-this, Al-that etc. (Refer to our recent 'sad' story of Syariah caning as an example).

Well, I don't expect each and everyone of us to know every single thing inside out, but a little research wouldn't hurt at all.

In Islam, Muslims are not allowed to eat pork. However, Muslims are allowed to touch pigs and dogs with no problem whatsoever. I myself am not cynophobic. Walking around Kota London can be quite a challenge for me. It's either you step on a big pile of dog-'shi-oot' or licked by these canines. However of course, as a Muslim, you have to clean using an Islamic method called 'Samak'.

"Nak bela anjing boleh tak? Comel lah!!!" Can Muslims take dogs as pets?

Why not? Guide dogs, guard dogs, hunter dogs, dogs to help sheep shearing, dogs to spend time with, your favourite companion perhaps, you name it. Dogs are useful, beautiful, playful, intelligent creatures. However, don't forget to clean yourself before prayers.

Do pigs and dogs go to heaven? As far as I'm concerned all animals go to heaven. For what reason they shouldn't? It's not up to me however, it's up to God to decide. Will pigs turn blue and fly in the heavens? Again, it's possible, but it's up to God to decide.

I myself would love to turn into Superman Blue and fly in the heavens. (but not turning into a pig at the same of course!)

Okay now comes the heavier part. Do you have to 'samak' if you touched a pig or any part of it?

Pigs, they are dirty animals. The reason why we Muslims are prohibited from eating pigs is simply because it is one of the hardest to cook, to make sure that it's clean and safe to eat. My friend Andrew confirmed that to me the other day when we met at his house in Leyton. But do we have to 'samak' in this case?

Phew, that was hard for me to even write it properly. Growing up following the Syafie Mazhab, I find that hard to swallow myself. It's true that you won't find the instruction in the Quran or the Hadith telling how to deal with this kind of najis.

Okay okay before any of you go berserk (like the caning incident), of course it's not wrong at all for you to 'samak' if you touch the pig. It means you are following the Syafie Mazhab and this Mazhab is not a sect but a guide. Which guide is the best? Hanafi? Hambali? Maliki? Syafie?

Allah knows best.

My Christian brothers and sisters might be puzzled now by how Muslims can even debate about pigs and dogs, gentle little harmless creatures. I don't want to offend but it's a giant myth to say only we Muslims are not allowed to eat pork according to our faith.

It's heavier now, don't tell me I did not warn you, but my Christian friends can check these verses from the Bible. I will not quote the exact verses, you guys should know better.

Leviticus 11:7-8

Deuteronomy 14:8

Isaiah 65:3-4

Isaiah 66:16-17

Evidently, these verses also apply to the Jews. In conclusion, Muslims, Christians and Judaism followers are not allowed to eat pork.

So when people say "Dowan lah masuk Islam, cannot eat pork", that is NOT a fair statement to make.

A fair statement should be (even if they want to be provocative):

"Dowan lah masuk Islam, Christian or Judaism, cannot eat pork!"

I remember when I was a lot younger during my high school days. Initially, I was terrified to even think about breaking the school's rules on my first day at Kolej Yayasan Saad, Melaka. Along the way, which was quite normal for any teenager there was a sense of liberation in me that I wanted to try new things. Thank Allah, the facilities provided by Yayasan Saad was second to none. Thus, I didn't have to break any rules to catter for my desire to be adventurous... until one day.

It was just a mere BBQ Party. I was so sure we had permission to do it. 'Hey, this is KYS... not some average school and I think it's cool we gather people around and eat some grub. Tak kacau orang pun'. I thought.

We were caught 'partying' with some chicks (literally) that night and the week after I was caned. Twice, one more compared to the others. Some of us got more than once because we had a record in which I won't elaborate here as it was such a silly case. (no, not sodomy if that's what you're thinking!). The caning has taught me a very good lesson, and I owe that to our now departed Principal, Mr Ramli Maidin.

I have learned that, after 'trying out new things and being adventurous' throughout, I have created a snob of myself. I was arrogant. I thought as if the world was all mine. The caning was a painful one eventhough how many underwears I wore that night. It has also succeeded in shattering my ego. I was never a God. I couldn't even stop Mr Ramli from whipping my bony ass.

Another BBQ Party, Jeghui? You bet! But with permission. Black and white!

Did I go around telling people I was victimised? Was it just a conspiracy to bring down the school's drummer of the year (as I arrogantly thought)? I was so thin, small and wiry so it was UNFAIR by all means I got the same punishment as the beefy Mat Diyah? Justice for Jeghui???!!

No. No. No. No, it was all justified.

Years later, I read somewhere that teachers are not allowed to cane students anymore. My first thought? What pampered society have we become?

Then came the Kartika's story in which I won't elaborate here. What I know is that, Alhamdulillah she has abstained from taking alcohol and out of repentance, she wants the punishment of caning to be carried out. She looks a lot prettier now, donning the headscarf. I also heard she is going for Umrah.

And yet some people are against the things that she wants. What happened to her freedom to practice her religion?

Okay now, 1,2, or 6 lashes of the rattan? and how is the punishment be carried out? Do you even know?

Well I haven't seen how the caning is done when it comes to Islamic Syariah Law. As far as I know, the caning must not meant to cause bodily injury. Please remember that WHIPPING under the Federal Law and CANING under the Syariah Law is not the same. I have seen a demonstration of whipping under Federal Law for sexual offences, drug possession and BRIBERY during my St. Francis Melaka days. It still gives me the goosebumps everytime I think about it.

"Today, I'm ashamed to be calling myself a Malaysian..." said an Indian guy on Twitter after the news of three Muslim-women adulterers being caned broke out.

I quickly replied by saying, "You should reconsider calling yourself a Malaysian for not even knowing the Malaysian law."

I am no expert but I know that we have the dual system in the Malaysian Legal System, as enshrined in the Constitution of Malaysia (refer Article 121(1A)).

Additionally, Syariah or Islamic law is a matter of state law, except for Federal Territories of Malaysia. However, Syariah Law must adhere the Federal Constitution amended 1984 at all times:

1. Trial and punishment carried out to MUSLIMS ONLY. In other words, Non-Muslims are always exempted. (Boohoo! That's not fair! Justice for Muslims??)
2. Fine of not more than RM5000.
3. Jail term not more than 3 years.
4. Caning of not more than 6 lashes.
5. Combination of item 2,3,4 maximum permissable.

I am still searching for the item 'no caning for women' but to no avail. So, I don't understand what is the fuss all about.

Why are these people justifying adultery? They're concerned for the treatment of women, but this caning is NOTHING compared to the whipping under the Federal's Criminal Law. Are they trying to be hypocrites now when they hate men cheating on them but now they are justifying adultery? Is this how you are being fair to we men? (Note to editors, delete this section if you think it sounds sexist, though it's not to me).

It is because the Syariah Law has to follow the Constitution's guide as above, the punishment for adulterers and drunkards are slashed to a maximum 6 lashes from 20, according to the Sunnah. It could have been even a lot heftier under the Hudud Law PAS is bringing (not that I personally against it).

Six lashes of the rattan, and the whole nation went berserk. What kind of Malaysia do you want? A nation of adulterers and drunkards? Would you like to see your children becoming adulterers, drunkards, sodomites and catamites? I don't know. Maybe you people are the so-called 'Westernised people' and you think it's cool that way.

Hey, I am living in a Western country and I still keep my 'Budaya Kampung' and Islamic values everywhere. I don't have to be like them, they don't expect me to be like them. I dont expect them to be like me. So this kind of culture that you should adopt.

So I do not know what are you guys babbling about. Coming back to caning, I would love to have my children caned by the teachers, as long as it's for the right reason lah.

But of course, first things first, I have to get married in order to 'make' babies.

Adultery is waayyy too risky. Too risky for me, too risky for her.

'Moderate Muslims'

PKR Kulim Bandar Bahru MP Zulkifli Nordin is now seen by the 'people' as an extreme Muslim. He was even called a Taliban and his recent spat with giggly-on-TV (ref:Aljazeera Asia-Pacific 'Allah' debate) PAS MP Khalid Samad has somehow confirmed this label by the 'people'. Zulkifli, during his interviews with Malaysiakini has again and again said that he will not compromise when it comes to Islam. He even said he has been consistent throughout his life whenever he is asked about an Islamic issue. There are also 'people' who accuse Zulkifli as an UMNO's trojan horse.

The question is, who are these 'people'? Well, obviously, these 'people' are the people who do not actually understand Zulkifli's religion and his defence of The Constitution. These 'people' can be many of Non-Muslims or even some Muslims, whom they call themselves 'moderate Muslims'. These 'moderate Muslims' have been given heaps of praises by many Non-Muslims because simply, in their opinion, this is the kind of Muslims all Muslims should be. This is the kind of Muslims that would fit the society.

But who are these 'Moderate Muslims'? I have seen people who claimed to be 'Moderate Muslims' (MMs) in their writings. Weird enough, these people's initials, two of them in particular, are 'MM' as well. The thing is though, what makes them think that they are 'Moderate Muslims'?

So what makes you a 'highly accepted' MM?

You 'support' Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno and calling Jabatan Agama Islam Kuantan's verdict as barbaric... and you call yourself an MM.

You reject Kartika's right to repent and to follow her Islamic faith, by accepting the caning... and you call yourself an MM.

You poke fun at Muslims who practice polygamy eventhough many of them are happy that way... and you call yourself an MM.

You call Muslim men who take second, third and fourth wife as bad, bad men, calling them 'Orang Tua Gatal' even... and you call yourself an MM.

You call for the practice of polygamy in Islam to be nationally abolished, ala USA... and you call yourself an MM.

You say capital punishment should be abolished, Hudud Law is old and outdated... and you call yourself an MM.

You say Quran is just for the people during Muhammad's (PBUH) time, outdated, should not always apply now... and you call yourself an MM.

You accept the practice of homosexuality because they have the right to fall in love... and you call yourself an MM.

You say sodomites, catamites and transvestites have their right to choose the best for their lives... and you call yourself an MM.

You say you don't have to wear the hjjaab (headscarves) because they are out of fashion... and you call yourself an MM.

You call the Muslimahs who wear the burqas 'ninjas', 'kolot' and 'oppressed by the husbands'... and you call yourself an MM.

You question the Faraid Law, saying it's unfair to the women... and you call yourself an MM.

You say drug abuse can be eradicated by giving them free drugs called Methadone... and you call yourself an MM.

You say gambling is Okay, justified by of buying and selling shares... and you call yourself an MM.

You say drinking is permissible, as long as you don't get drunk and drinking alcohol is Okay... and you call yourself an MM.

You say adultery is fine, as long as you are 'protected'... and you call yourself an MM.

You are a member of Sisters In Islam, and secular nation is the way... and you call yourself an MM.

... and the list goes on.

You see, atleast I have a little respect for Zinedine Zidane. People did ask if he was a Muslim. He replied, "Yes, but I am a non-practising Muslim".

Did he say he is a Moderate Muslim? Did he justify all the unislamic things he did or didn't do what he is supposed to do as a Muslim? Did he?

Same goes to Shah Rukh Khan. He is a Muslim. Like Zinedine, he admits to being a non-practicing Muslim. Not that he's asking people to be like him. But he is simply telling people that he is a non-practicing Muslim.

'Non-practicing', a negative phrase.

So this phrase, 'Moderate Muslims' is glorified. One even wrote a book claiming she is a Muslim entitled 'I am Muslim' when at the same time, she dares the Muslimahs to take four husbands, as an act to protest against polygamy.

An MM with the initials MM, even asked her daughter there is no need to wear the hijjab.

What if her daughter wants to wear the hijjab? What happens to the so-called 'rights' that these people have been defending?

Another MM with the initials MM, has failed in her bid to eradicate drug abuse using Methadone. Statistics in Perak has shown not only the number of addicts have increased, but they even mis-use the freely available drug called Methadone.

Someone is making money?

There is even one 'westernised bigot' with the initials WIWC, calling himself a non-racist, Liberal Muslim. What is this 'Liberal Muslim'? Liberal means 'not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas'. So is he saying the holy Quraan is an established, traditional, orthodox, authoritarian dogmas and he wants to be free from it?

I say, be like Zinedine Zidane and Shah Rukh Khan! They are Muslims (person who submits wholly to the only God, the Creator) but they admit to being non-practicing. What humble and honest people they are.

If you ask me, these self-claimed MMs are not only in denial, they even want other people to be like them, gather a large support for their causes, so that they will feel fine having people around them. This is human nature. They just want to say they are fine people even with the expense of God's commandments.

I also have a friend who told me he is not religious. He didn't even try to make an effort to make himself feel good by declaring himself a Moderate Muslim. For that, I respect him, and pray that we all, including myself, especially myself will be shown the right path that is the Siratul-mustaqim.

Brothers and sisters, there is only one Islam and there shouldn't be some kind of labelling. I know this labelling is first made by the West, calling some Muslim terrorists, Islamic fanatists, extreme Muslims, among others.

Hence the phrase 'Moderate Muslims'. If you read the Quraan, you will know that Islam is moderate, and the concept of Wasatiyyah should apply.

Again there is one Islam. Even the Islam Hadhari campaign has confused some people. But if you have the traits as stated above, thus calling yourself a Moderate Muslim, I suggest you have to reconsider labeling yourself as such. You are confusing the people even the non-Muslims!

I wouldn't have to write this article if you were to call yourself 'not religious' and 'not practicing'.

Green Energy for Malaysia

I really think green energy is cool.

Countries going for green energy, are giving an impression of how civilised and environmentally friendly they are.

Green and renewable energy technology, such as hydro-electric, windmills, biomass and solar powered generators are not easily found in Malaysia.

Apparently, developed countries with green technology, will never share it for charity.

This has made me wonder, if they are so interested in saving the world and fighting climate change, the technology should be transferred only at cost, not premium to third world and developing countries.

Then only I will see them as civilised people.

If not, they are just capitalysts who are only interested in making money out of noble things.

Maybe Malaysians should create their own green technology with the knowledge they have.

I'm sure we are not that stupid in believing that the West are the only people who have this technology. We also, can be inventors.

I'm not asking people to create a new energy, but rather using the technology that is currently available and improvise it.

Not Urgent for Herald to Use 'Allah'

This is my third article regarding the issue. To date my colleagues have yet to ask me about the 'Allah' issue in Malaysia.

It's either they can't be bothered with it or simply too 'afraid' to discuss the matter with me.

I second the former.

That is the difference between people in the UK and Malaysia. Many Malaysians, still 'afraid' to SPEAK UP.

Instead of speaking up, discussing the matter level-headedly, some chose to torch the churches and suraus.

Malaysians, are still young to handle some issues with 'hikmah', eventhough they are suggested to do so by religions.

Today, I will try to underline a solution for this issue. It has been dragging for years already. When the matter became a lot worse with places of worship being burnt, the best thing many of our so called great leaders did was blaming each other.

Some leaders were quick enough to visit those places with some goodies and words of support, others, politicised the issue hoping to get a run of political mileage.

Disgusting!

Right, solution! Let us be as practical as possible. You guys want to discuss about it, conduct an open dialogue, thats fine, but please get someone who is impartial and non-partisans. I am quite sick already with people politicising the issue. It's like cancer! Even if you have to invite politicians, it's fine but make sure he/she's not a politicKING/QUEEN.

In my humble opinion, I don't see it is urgent for Herald to use 'Allah' in their Bahasa Malaysia version. The argument of Christians in Sabah and Sarawak have been reading 'Allah' in Herald cannot be used to indicate some sort of urgency. The reason why Christians in Syria, Egypt and other parts of the Middle East have been using 'Allah' for thousands of years is simply that they are Arabic speakers.

There are also stories of the pagan Meccans and Egypt Copts (Christians) referring their God as 'Allah' during Muhammad's (PBUH) time. This is simply because they were arabic speakers.

Herald wants to use 'Allah' in their Bahasa Malaysia version, not Arabic version.

Therefore, it is not timely for Herald to use it since millions of Muslims and small number of Non-Muslims in the Peninsula object to it. Malaysia then hit the headlines around the world for the wrong reason over this avoidable issue. Herald, NOT using 'Allah' in their Bahasa version will definitely ease the tension. The Christians, shouldn't feel as if they lost their 'Allah' and should never be angry about it. Herald BM in East Malaysia, can continue using the word 'Allah'.

Thing is though, I must ask, how many Bibles are written in Arabic that is available in Malaysia?

Situational point of view, unlike Muslims in East Malaysia, Muslims in the Peninsula are not comprehensively informed about the usage of 'Allah' by Eastern Malaysian Christians for decades. Of course there is a huge difference in opinions and it will take decades as well for the people in the Peninsula to absorb it. Thus, it is quite normal for the Muslims in the Peninsula to be strongly against it.

I personally think since the East Malaysians are not Arabic speakers, why bother using an Arabic word for God when you have Tuhan in Bahasa? However, since the Christians in the East has been using it for decades, I dare not take that away from them.

Now, I must ask the Muslims in Malaysia, when you read the Asma ul-Husna, do you find 'Allah' in the 99 names of Allah? When I was 8, I asked my ustazah how come 'Allah' is not included in the Asma ul-Husna? Of course she couldn't answer such a big question. It took me years only to realise that Allah is not the name of God in Islam but rather, Allah is what Arabic speakers call God, the Creator of the Universe and everything inside it.

However, since the Holy Quraan was sent down by God, through Jibril the Angel to Muhammad (PBUH) in Arabic, of course the word 'Allah' is more fond with the Muslims. Hadiths are also written in Arabic and to be fair, this is why the Muslims in Malaysia thought 'Allah' is exclusive only for Islam.

Again, Allah is a standard Arabic word for God and is used by arabic speaking people particularly from the Abrahamic faiths. Since Islam accepts the four Holy Books of Taurat, Zabur, Injil and Al-Quraan, we should not object the people who are reading the Torah (Taurat), Psalms (Zabur) and Bible (Injil) in ARABIC using the word 'Allah'. (even though it is arguable the similarities between each of the books from Islamic and non-Islamic point of view).

I know some people who claim to be 'Moderate Muslims' (MM and MM for example) or 'Liberal Muslims' (when there's no such thing as those since Islam always promotes moderation through the concept of Wasatiyyah) would welcome the idea of Herald using 'Allah' in their Bahasa version IMMEDIATELY, but for me, it is not a wise thing to do. The situation will not agree to it and it's impossible to change their mindset in one night.

There is a reason why many Malaysian Muslims are prejudiced to it.

-Why there is a need for Herald to use the word 'Allah' at such an untimely manner?

Some has labeled these people as 'Islamic extremists' and even UMNO-paid agent provocateurs. (I am not referring to the arsonists -these people should be ISA-ed ASAP).

I have to agree with these so called 'extremists' at some point.

It is not urgent and Herald is not having it in Arabic anyway.

And most importantly, most would object to it.

Malaysian-Facebookers against the use of 'Allah' by Herald = 199,242. (76%)
Malaysian-Facebookers in support of Herald using 'Allah' = 62,284. (24%).

Peace be upon all of you

I think everyone should know by now that Islam is a religion of peace, and Al-Qaeda and other terrorism acts around the world is unislamic.

Islam teaches us not to solve issues through violence and also Islam teaches us to respect other people's religion.

When Muslims greet each other, we say "Peace be upon you". However, the term is also not exclusive for the Muslims.

Oh please don't go fight for the use of 'Assalaamualaikum' pulak! I am pretty sure everyone can use the greet as it promotes peace, as demanded by Islam.

I am furious with the way some people react to the issue of 'Allah' being used by Herald's BM version. I am NOT a fan of street demos, but yesterday, 10 demos were conducted peacefully at several mosques and I say kudos to them.

For a moment, today I feel a bit ashamed to call myself Malaysian as I thought the news I saw were from our neighbouring country. Churches were torched and I thought I will never see that happening in Malaysia in my life.

I am calling everyone to be calm. I do hope my humble advise is heard by the people eventhough I am just a nobody.

It is a sad day for Malaysia and thank God noone was hurt or killed.

To the politicians, please stop politicising by blaming each other. For the sake of the people, put aside your craze for popularity and power and do the right thing.

To Herald, I hope you can see now the effect of disregarding the sensitivity of millions of Muslims in Malaysia. You must remember that the Muslims in the peninsular and the East Malaysia understand differently regarding the concept of 'Allah', and do you ask yourself, is there really a need to use the term when people in the Peninsular are not READY?

To all Muslim brothers and sisters, always refer to the holy Quraan and Hadith, and you will know you should always stay calm.

To all Non-Muslim brothers and sisters, there is a need for us to understand each other and build bridges, not quarelling and bickering over sensitive issues. It is evidently clear that the gap is still very, very huge and it will take time for us to actually realise perfect mutual understanding.

Let this be a lesson for all of us. Everyone is at fault. I am not here to say 'I told you so' but when politics, insensitivity, anger and chauvinism are put aside, we will always do the right thing.

We SHOULD always do the right thing.

Most Malaysian-Muslims are in Support of the 'Allah' Ban for Herald

The title might be misleading for some, or rubbish for the hardcores but realistically speaking, it is a fair one.

I am here not to take sides, but it is alarming to see the figure you can find from a Facebook Group claiming themselves to be against the use of the word 'Allah' by Non-Muslim groups. The group, calling themselves "Menentang Penggunaan Nama Allah oleh Golongan Bukan Islam" now has 94,005 members and the number is still growing. (as at 6th January 2010, 1024 hours London time).

As a comparison, the Prime Minister's Facebook has 69,163 fans after 2 months in operation, Anwar Ibrahim has 34,194 fans after almost a year and 1Malaysia with 59,783 fans.

I am not being political but when I mentioned these comparisons, it is because they will indicate relevant statistics.

Unless you are from Planet Zargon, it is fair to say it is hard to find supporters of Anwar Ibrahim are also supporters of Najib Razak. Leaving out 2.5% as statistical error, the group has easily dwarfed the number of Muslims in support for Anwar or Najib combined. The 1Malaysia group on the other hand, provides indication of how the members can be more serious about the issue than the national's propaganda.

Browsing through the members of the group, I can say about 98% of them are Muslims. Sceptics might say it is due to over-emotion, racism and prejudice but the large number indicates what these Muslims actually believe all their lives and supporting this group is a way to protect their knowledge of Islam.

It is an acid test for both coalitions, Pakatan Rakyat for the 'Ketuanan Rakyat' concept and Barisan Nasional with their 1Malaysia concept. Both, have expressed their opinions on the matter but unfortunately, both have been hypocritical about it.

Because statistics revolve around the theory of large numbers, based on the Facebook figures (yes, you can learn a lot from FB), it is fair to say that most Muslims are against the usage of 'Allah' in Herald. Since Muslims make up about 60% of the Malaysian population, it is safe to say most Malaysians are in support of the ban. For that, Pakatan Rakyat has ignored the voice of the majority for this case, even if the majority comprises of mostly from one community. What happened to bringing back the power to the people?

Barisan Nasional on the other hand wants to promote unity through mutual understanding with their 1Malaysia concept. So why did they have to apply against the stay of execution of the High Court's decision when they should concentrate on indoctrinating the people of all religions about the 'Allah' as the One True God for All concept?

I don't write to please people. I don't write to become popular. I write simply to share my humble views with the people. I must admit I myself found it a bit confusing when this case actually appeared a few years ago. However, after a deep research on the 'Allah' concept, I agree on the part that Allah is God, in Arabic term and Allah belongs to everyone, not just the Muslims.

Saying that though, we have to look at the reaction of the people and it is quite clear most Muslims in Malaysia are against the usage of the term.

The question is, why?

Many politicians will politicise this issue and that is fair because it's the only thing they are good at. Come again? No, read again. I did not generalise and I used the word 'many', not 'most' or 'all'. However though, I am confident to say MOST Muslims in Malaysia still think 'Allah' can only be used by Muslims. I do not blame them though as I myself was never taught about the definition and the concept of 'Allah' during all Islamic Studies classes I joined during my younger days.

Thanks to Wikipedia, it is all clear now. But of course Rome was not built in one day, it will take many, many years to 'undo' these misinformation that has been planted in the minds of Muslims in Malaysia through the 'Pendidikan Islam' syllabus. There's nothing wrong with the syllabus. The concept of 'Allah' as the God for all creatures not just for the Muslims is simply not highlighted there. Scores still think 'Allah' is the Muslim God, 'Jesus the Nazareth' is the only Christian God and Buddha is the Buddhist God when all these thoughts are wrong altogether.

When these Muslims are misinformed, the thought of a Christian Daily (Herald) to use 'Allah' for the Bahasa Malaysia version would leave a bad taste. It is normal for people to protect all the knowledge and beliefs they carry all their lives. It is also natural to be prejudice. Some might think Herald is just trying their best to lure fellow Muslims to convert to Christianity when the Bahasa Malaysia version use the word 'Allah' instead of the norm 'Tuhan'.

For the peninsular people atleast.

Christians in Sabah and Sarawak have been reading the Bahasa Malaysia version with the word 'Allah' in reference to God. Of course it is a shock for the Peninsular people to accept something which is very uncommon to them. That is normal.

All this while, Islam is taught in Bahasa Malaysia and what if an Islamic daily wanted to use 'Jesus' in reference to the Messenger of God, not the 'Son of God', according to Christians belief. Naturally, (oh please don't lie) the Christians will find it hard to accept if the Islamic daily was to freely use it publicly, writing on their coverpage 'JESUS IS NOT GOD' and repeating it again and again and again...

What happened to sensitivity?

Al-Islam snooping in the Church to look out for Muslims who convert to Christianity? Feel free to be angry! That is insensitive if you ask me.

Herald using 'Allah' for their Bahasa Malaysia version despite anger from the Muslims. That is insensitive if you ask me.

So let us be fair.

Again, I don't have a real solution for this debacle. But let me suggest a few things. First, for now, Herald should not be allowed to use 'Allah' in their Bahasa Malaysia version because the people rejecting it and why do you think it is a BIG ISSUE at the first place? It is simply because most Muslims if not most Malaysians are against it.

Secondly, in the years to come, please include the concept of 'Allah' as the One True God, The God for All, because Allah creates every single thing in this universe and for that, Allah is the One God for All, not just the Muslims in the Pendidikan Islam syllabus.

Thirdly, it is very very clear how Malaysians, be it Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists etc do not actually know each other very well, if not are sensitive towards each other. We need to do more campaigns on promoting understanding and respect among each other.

Chelsea to win it

That was a very-very good result at Upton Park. I did not expect Chelsea to drop points at the weekend but with Arsenal (the team I support) drawing at Turf Moor (Burnley) at mid-week but winning at home against tricky Hull City, I can proudly say that the English Premier League is now the most exciting league in the world!

Of course, it's not that I have high-hopes for the Gunners. I am always skeptical these days with Arsenal since they have yet to claim a major trophy in 4 years. However, deep inside my heart, I know that Arsene is Mr. Arsenal. He's building a proper football club, concentrating on the development of the youth and who knows, in the years to come, these creme de la creme will be the most feared team in the world, winning back to back titles.

Saying that though, Mr. Wenger has a problem. He's too stubborn. When the media said this, he will quickly brush off their opinions just to prove that he's got his own stand. It is true that football is a physical game. Thats why you have a gym at your training ground. I know this since my younger days, failing to get into the school team simply because I was too small.

Maybe I should marry a Swedish girl so that my children won't suffer the same fate!

So, Arsenal really need lanky players on the field. Abou Diaby should play more regularly as long as he can put behind his niggling injuries. He could provide more aerial prowess and win the ball from the middle of the park. We also need a towering striker because it would be a waste to have Bakary Sagna supplying the crosses but with a Crouch-like bean-pole unavailable up front. I am not sure if Bendtner is ready for the job though.

As for our two center backs, Gallas and Vermaelen, well, they might be fast, but we still need to improve on defending setpieces because we do struggle with them a lot of times. I have no proposals on who we should sign to replace Gallas next season but I do hope tall players from other positions will come back and defend well for the shorties.

Note that I use 'we' because I feel like I am a part of Arsenal FC. It's a 'religious' thing if you ask the English.

As for this season, I really think is going to be tight. I do not think Chelsea will have a difficult January due to the African Nations Cup because, if you look at the fixtures, they will have some easy opponents. Manchester United meanwhile is having a torrid time solving their defensive crisis with the likes of Rio and Nemanja struggling to be fit. Aston Villa can mount a serious title challenge this season if they can get atleast a point from the Boxing Day game against the Gunners. Even Tottenham is not far behind.

Liverpool is already out of the race strictly speaking.

It is going to be an exciting season. With Arsenal giving hopes to the faithfuls, my verdict is that Chelsea will grab the title from holders Manchester United.

What? Of course I'm an avid Arsenal supporter, but I'm just being realistic and impartial here. We will finish second this season if we are lucky enough.

Man Utd and their City rivals will complete the Big Four.

West Ham, Hull and Portsmouth will be relegated.

Know your rights

Yesterday I had a quarrel with a lady on the phone regarding a Paypal scam. Yes, yes I know you guys might think how lame I am that I could fall for the trap but in my defence, the scammer had 59 100% positive feedbacks and it didn't cross a novice user like me that eBay accounts might be hacked into.

The lady requested for a further 3-day investigation period instead of the informed-on-the-screen only 10 days were given to the seller to supply them with information to resolve the issue. I argued that Paypal didn't put the 3-day lag anywhere in the Terms and Conditions and it was so clear that Mohamad Hossain (a suspect terrorists-mother-funder *&%^&) had cheated more than 2 people after my case was opened.

15 minutes and £6 pounds later, the lady still insisted that she would look into the matter again, and I suspected PayPal has actually forgotten about the case and only revisited the matter after I gave a nasty call.

Guess what happened 2 minutes after I slammed the phone? (not literally - you simply ended the call with the touch of a button these days, if you're from Mars). The amount immediately appeared on my PayPal account balance as £442.00 instead of £0.00.

"Now you know who's the boss!" I muttered.

Well it's somehow reaffirming that customers are always right. We are like Kings and bosses when come to business deals. These people just want your money, and so, they must earn it. I remember each time I went out with me Ma for lunch or dinner in Kelana Jaya and each time if she's unhappy with her food, I will ask the waiter/waitress to taste the food/drink and ask him/her if they were any good.

In the end, it's either I ask for a refund or replace the drink (the lesser punishment always applies).

The week before, Ginnan Sushi offered me free soft-shell crab Maki and Sushi and Sashimi Set worth £18 pounds after they failed to deliver fresh sashimi in the previous order. They only did that because I demanded of my right as they stated in their advert the foods are all fresh, guaranteed in a straight-forward email.

People always forget about this kinda things. Don't call me aggressive just because I am exercising my rights. Some people are just too shy, if not too scared to ask even though they know they should get what is rightfully theirs.

However, I don't know if it works in Malaysia though. When dealing with repairs services, people seldom forget that a shoddy work by the repairman must always be complained with their service unpaid. It happened to be before when I sent my old bike for repairs in PJ when the rude Uncle nastily and hastily repaired my bike right in front of me and I simply paid him the money without no fuss.

Returning from home, I thought, what the hell? I paid RM20 for that shit service?

Atleast I have learnt from that mistake. Some people however, just don't get it. They send their cars for repairs at Ah Cheong's place, more than 10 times just to get the wiper done while the rest of the parts would came loose later.

Yes, Ah Cheong is a real guy who has a car service center next to BSN/711 in Kelana Jaya.

So KJ mates, avoid the place at all cost!

I dunno if it's a tragic blunder by some companies asking us to leave customer feedbacks. So make sure you do it sincerely, honestly and BLUNTLY (if you may).

It works for me.

Zambry’s Q&A Session

As usual every weekend I will always look for an opportunity to fill up the day in boring London. I received an invitation to attend a session called “The new Perak: Emerging from the Crisis” by Perak Menteri Besar Dato Seri Zambry Abdul Kader so I guess I wanted to give it a go.

As I didn’t want to be late, after a quick lunch at Thai Square, Strand (being served by a pretty bespectacled Siamese lady – worth notifying here) I dashed to the Kings College’s Edmund J Safra Lecture Theatre only to find out the guests of honour were late, as expected.

This time, we had a better proportion of Malaysians from the floor. We had more Malays than UKEC Homecoming for Nik Nazmi, although these so called people who claimed to be multiracial still sit with their own ‘kind’. The Malays with the Malays, the Non-Malays with Non-Malays although the sight of a Datuk with his Caucasian wife of about 40 years from Ipoh somehow added some balance to it.

A good Chinese friend of mine had saved me a good spot and here we go, here we go. I noticed the man of the moment from a group of smartly dressed men taking their seats. Zambry was all smiling (northen slang - ghenyeh) like a ‘kerang busuk’ in the eyes of Pakatan supporters but like a friendly leader for the neutrals and the BN supporters.

MC: Salam 1Malaysia.

What? A new way to greet Malaysians?

It was my first time listening to Zambry and my take on him is he is indeed a friendly leader. The man got some humour in him as well. A bit about himself during his younger days, he claimed to be very active in football and was dubbed the ‘Pangkor Pele’. I couldn’t hold my laughter any longer when I started imagining Pele and Zambry side by side playing for Team Pangkor in a friendly match.

Man, don’t they look like brothers? Or shall I say father and his 40s son?

Zambry had the State Secretary Dr. Abdul Rahman Hashim and his laywer Feirouz (who looks like Nazir Razak) by his side seated on the stage together with the MC. He promised not to be too political during his speech and would rather have a no-holds barred session with the members of the floor. He also commented a bit on how he will do about improving the economy of Perak. He even repeatedly urged the Perakians (and also non-perakians) to return to Perak and develop the state.

At first sight, Dr. Abdul Rahman didn’t look friendly with his long face. Feirouz’s tie was too long. And Zambry couldn’t stop smiling. The hardcore Pakatan fans were not impressed with Zambry’s smile and it clearly showed when they bombarded the questions. One was even seen to be so emotionally engulfed, asking questions while struggling to breathe.

Feirouz was there to read out the Perak Constitution when needed to. There were the same old Q and A you can find these days so I will not elaborate more here. Generally I am satisfied with Zambry’s and Feirouz’s answers to the questions although I could not be bothered as I knew the answer even before the session.

However there’s something new that I haven’t heard of that is under the Perak Constitution, a pact must work officially as a team in order to be recognised as having the immediate majority. During the March 2008 election, Barisan was only short of two seats in order to take the majority. PAS, PKR and DAP however, did not officially work under an umbrella during the election and even by saying that, “WITH THE DISCREATION OF THE SULTAN”, PAS-PKR-DAP was still accepted to be the new lawmakers of Perak.

To be fair, let me remind you that Pakatan Rakyat was not in existent during the last election.

Feirouz then said under the Perak Constitution, if a party has lost its majority, the MB must immediately resign from his post. But Nizar did not even the Sultan has advised him to. Then, I quote Zambry saying “the Divajee Sivakumar” who claimed to be the rightful Speaker suspended Zambry and 8 other BN ADUNs and passed one motion.

“You call this democracy?” Zambry asked the audience and smiled.

I have to agree that Sivakumar made that mistake because he was overwhelmed by emotion. How can you suspend half of the Opposition Team to vote? It’s like having the referee red carding 10 players from the same team right after the kickoff and let the goalie play all alone?

I may sound like a BN supporter now but for the case of Perak, I believe that Pakatan is calling the kettle black and is fighting the losing battle. Be a man. You lose the numbers, you bow out gracefully.

Sept 16, if you had the numbers, are you saying you will dissolve the Parliament?

Well at least according to one smart ass law student (dressed up like a lawyer just to convince the audience that he knows EVERYTHING about the law and Anwar Ibrahim.)

The boy, arrogantly asked Feirouz to read out the Perak Constitution regarding the power of Sultan declaring BN as the rightful lawmakers because he couldn’t find it anywhere and Feirouz read it out word by word quite handsomely.

“WITH THE DISCREATION OF SULTAN this… WITH THE DISCREATION OF SULTAN that...”

The boy could not say anything. He then, out of anger boldly made a statement “I believe if Sept 16 was to materialised, ANWAR WILL DISSOLVE THE PARLIAMENT”

Zambry quickly replied (with a smile, again), “Brother… trust me, I know Anwar better than you do.”

Then the crowd was laughing at the boy. Clearly a hardcore Pakatan fan here, blinded by the charm words of his idols. Even a neutral like me felt he was ‘too clever’ to say that. Red-faced, he was just speechless.

I always reminded my now defunct rock band to simply have fun when performing in front of a big crowd, as long as you don’t make a fool of yourself.

When the long 3 hour session came to almost an end, the microphone was passed to Abdul Rahman and he suddenly said, with a school-teacher tone, “Based on the questions given by you, it is clear that some if not all of you did not read the case fully, comprehensively and fairly. I am shocked that you are supposed to be talented Malaysians and you should do more investigation not just read and absorb everything you read in the blogs.” (Note: not his real quote, but something like that lah).

To be honest, what Rahman said is true, but maybe not the right manner. We are not schoolchildredn!

One bespectacled M. Nasir look-alike from Swansea immediately rose up and asked Abdul Rahman to take back his words, because he, self-claiming to be representing the members of the floor, felt offended with Abdul Rahman’s remark as if the audience were that stupid.

“TARIK BALIK! TARIK BALIK!”

Haha! What do you think this is? Circus? Malaysian Parliament?

Again Zambry had to save the day. “Dia dah tarik balik la tu…”

The crowd just laughed off the incident and I still smile each time I remember that incident.

“TARIK BALIK!!”

To wrap up the session, Zambry kept reminding himself and the people to do less with politics and work hard for the State of Perak. He told us he just got back from the USA to find investors to develop Perak, helping the state to regain the title the richest state in Malaysia.

“PERAK MAJU DAN AMAN.” – Perak – Peace and Prosperity.

Well, best of luck for that mate. I miss the old peaceful Perak, Taiping especially, the town I grew up in.

After checking the goodies (including a Daulat Tuanku badge, Criminalise War badge, Nasi Goreng and currypuffs), I headed home smiling… just like Zambry.

Adab berdoa

Adab berdoa.

Masih aku ingat ketika aku masih kecil. Susuk badan yang memang kecil membuatkan aku menjadi bahan bulian seorang rakan di sekolah agama di Assam Kumbang, Taiping. Sepulangan aku ke rumah, diadukan kisah itu kepada ibuku… tetapi aduan itu hanyalah terpendam di dalam hati. Aku yang pernah menyandang gelaran ‘Si Leleh’ oleh kerana suka menangis, sentiasa mengingatkan diri sendiri supaya menjadi lebih tabah dan kuat seperti abang-abangku.

Namun pada suatu hari, kemarahan aku tidak dapat lagi dibendung. Kerana sangat marahnya aku kepada Hafiz, aku mengeluarkan tangan aku lalu berdoa supaya Allah datangkan bala kepadanya dan gagal dalam peperiksaan akan datang.

Aku pada ketika itu berumur 7 atau 8 tahun. Tidak pasti.

Beberapa hari kemudiannya, aku diajarkan adab-adab berdoa oleh Ustaz Baharum. Seingatku, ada diajarkan tentang doa yang tidak akan diterima Allah dan doa-doa di waktu yang mustajab.

Antara doa-doa yang ditolak oleh Islam termasuklah doa meminta supaya diri sendiri dicabutkan nyawa oleh Allah ketika berada dalam keadaan yang sangat malang dan susah. Peringatan yang diajarkan ustaz ini masih segar di kotak fikiranku.

Aku seraya bertanyakan Ustaz Baharum jika dimakbulkan doa memintakan musibah atau bala diturunkan kepada orang yang jahat yang melakukan perkara-perkara yang menyakiti kepada kawan-kawan, sambil mencebik muka ke arah Hafiz. Aku begitu mengharap Ustaz akan ‘menyokong’ adab berdoa sebegini kerana apa yang aku mahukan hanyalah keadilan dari Allah. Namun aku ternyata salah apabila ustaz menjawab,

“Tidak akan diterima doa yang meminta Allah menurunkan keburukan ke atas orang lain. Sebaik-baiknya, kita doakan supaya dia insaf dan kembali ke pangkal jalan. Jika tak boleh nak tegur pakai tangan, tegurlah pakai mulut dengan kata-kata. Jika tak mampu juga, tegurlah dengan hati dengan mendoakan dia supaya kembali kepada Allah.”

Tersentak hati aku pada ketika itu dan selalu menanyakan kenapa Allah tidak terus membalas si Hafiz yang nakal ini. Ustaz menambah yang dalam berdoa, kita harus bersabar dan nescaya Allah akan perkenan doa kita.

Sehingga kini aku amalkan nasihat yang Ustaz Baharum berikan. Apabila dewasa kini, aku sentiasa kaitkan nasihat-nasihat yang cikgu-cikgu serta ustaz berikan dengan ayat-ayat suci Al-Quraan untuk mendapatkan pengesahannya. Maka tergerak lah hati aku pada hari ini untuk mencari dalil yang menyatakan jika elok atau tidak kita mendoakan keburukan orang lain.

Antaranya adalah seperti berikut.

Nabi s.a.w bersabda :

" Tidaklah seorang muslim di atas bumi ini berdoa kepada Allah dengan suatu doa melainkan doanya tersebut akan dikabulkanNya atau dihindarkan orang itu dari bahaya sebanding dengan apa yang dimintanya selama doa itu tidak mengandungi dosa atau bermaksud hendak memutuskan silaturrahim "

" Janganlah kamu berdoa buruk terhadap dirimu , begitupun terhadap

Aku sewaktu kecil yang masih naïf itu tidak pernah merasakan dirinya begitu besar sehinggakan boleh melakukan sesuatu perkara yang Allah larang.

Bagi aku mereka inilah pendidik, mereka inilah yang aku harapkan supaya tidak sesat dalam arus kemewahan dan kekuasaan duniawi.

The Truth about BTN

Since Biro Tatanegara has been a hot issue of the late, thanks to an ADUN friend who brought out that matter at the Selangor State level, I will try to write of my personal experience and be as impartial as possible. To date, I’ve already gone to TWO BTNs as part of the pre-departure course under PNB and MARA. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about it.

I will talk about the food things first. Did I just say food? That was not a blatant typo but the food at BTNs is just AMAZING! I do not know if it has got to do with the hectic of jungle trekking or the marching practices but the food is simply fantastic. They may be simple Malaysian dishes like ‘ikan kembung goreng’ or ‘sayur campur’ but somehow even the steamed rice has some magic in it.

The ‘Pakcik Komandos’, I must say, are the unsung heroes in BTN programmes. They may look like they can eat you alive, but they are the nicest people around. They are very helpful, polite and really funny too. Their spontaneous jokes might have some repeated ones (just like other stand-up comedies anyway) but they can really make me laugh my flatulence off.

The programme itself, when done together for the whole group, is actually really good. It promotes unity, indoctrinating participants of the history of Malaysia, nationalism and patriotism (I do not know if they are of any different). During my second BTN in Negeri Sembilan, Namawee was the star of the show.

Note: Namawee, you can rap all you want mate, but rapping out of our National Anthem is somewhat disgraceful. Use Rasa Sayang or Anak Ayam if you may. They worked for Too Phat.

The difference between the two BTNs I attended is actually the age group. The first BTN was attended by pre-U students while the second one was mostly comprised of post-grad students. The level of maturity by the participants between the two was obvious but still I could find a ‘gila kuasa’ Penghulu making an idiot of himself. (I will not elaborate more).

The second BTN gave us some real life stories in which I found really helpful in terms of finding the truth out of it. This includes the Negarakuku as said above, Kampong Baru incident, corruption statistics (with the then ACA being the most corrupt) and others. Then we were separated into smaller groups of 10 to 15 I think. Now comes the bad part.

It was really weird when the groups were distributed, the Non-Malays (including Sabah Sarawak Bumiputras) are grouped together as one or two groups. I was quite angry not to be part of the Non-Malay group so that I could mingle with them more. (And of course, the fit girl I fancied went to the group as well :P). Later, I realised why the distribution was like so.

From my two visits to BTN, both facilitators that I got were downright RACISTS! The first BTN in Balik Pulau, there were two Chinese girls in my group but that didn’t stop the fascist facilitator from bashing the Chinese and Indians as ‘bangsa pendatang’ and making racist comments. Since I had enough of him, I planned on questioning his motives but I didn’t want to embarrass him in front of the group and so, I asked him one plain question right after the scheduled brainwashing class.

He was commenting on the way how DAP-Cina would administer the federal government. DAP was labelled as a Communist Party that would only anger the Malays because of their principles. And so, I asked him, “Kita sekarang ni, di Balik Pulau. Kenapa saya lihat kawasan di Balik Pulau ni seakan tidak maju? Dan rata-rata penduduknya Orang Melayu. Kenapa UMNO biarkan Gerakan ‘tindas’ orang Melayu dan orang Kampung di Balik Pulau dari segi pembangunan?”

Do you know what he answered?

“Kita sedang pantau mereka. UMNO sedang pantau mereka…”

What is that supposed to mean? Pantau? Is that the best you can do? Just now you were talking your wrinkly-racist-balls out like the world is yours and now, you are telling me the best you can do to these Chinese Penang government is to monitor their progress? Just because they are part of BN?

Why cudn’t you say the same to them just like you said about DAP?

I think he’s got himself the taste of his own medicine. He wanted to be Ultra-UMNO, Ultra-Malay but deep in his heart, he knows that he, being a big-headed veteran, we are all Malaysians after all and he shouldn’t play the racist card as he will end up answering tough questions like that with stupid answers like so.

I did nothing but shook my head with a bit of a smirk on my face. BTN is such a good way to promote unity and to remind us of the sacrifices our fore-fathers had made in order for us to enjoy peace and harmony in Malaysia. However, because of this kind of fascists roaming around freely trying to ‘convert’ the participants into anti-Non-Malays Group has somewhat tainted the BTN image. They shouldn’t be allowed to even step foot on the Malaysian soil at all!

Then, there was one question that the group had to answer, the one big fat question that all participants will be talking about after the course. I knew right from the start that the answer was going to be:

“C: Give the project to the Government-friendly consortium although it has poor knowledge and expertise about the project.”

It is because I know A and B had the keyword “Opposition” and “Foreign Company” respectively, and after all we only had the so-called ‘healthy’ one-way discussion with The Fascist so I urged the group to just pick C so that we could have an early lunch!

Away from my own experience, I was told by my friend that her Muslim friend was asked one question that goes “If you have to choose one, would you pick the country first or your religion first?”

Being a boss for some time in a Multinational Company, she answered, “Islam first”.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I will pick religion over country.”

“Why? Without our country, there will be no Islam!”

“No, I will choose Islam over country at all cost. I am a Muslimah”

Muslimah indeed, not your Dina Zaman-like ‘Muslimah’.

And then the Fascist started sobbing and crying. When I heard that I was like?

“What? This is new! Now they are rejecting Islam over BN? Ya Allah! Crying some more?”

So yeah, I’m not saying that all facilitators are like that. I would say most of them are like that. Depends on which group you are in. I bet the facilitator in the Non-Malay group would be more 1Malaysia.

It’s sad… because I want to see more of the Komandos and the great people among the participants. Hey, I made many friends from BTN (and many annoying ones too). The fact of the matter is, BTN is great when racial cards are not played. I am not sure if we are provided booklets to hate the Opposition nowadays as reported by some, (there wasn’t any during my time) but if he BN people think BTN is their greatest weapon, they are just plain wrong.

We may look like kids. But we are not. People grow up, you know?

And so are Malaysians.

Justice for Criminals?

1. Recently there have been some issues regarding cops killing armed-criminals causing a public outcry especially from a certain community.

2. The head of a Gangster group called Dewa was shot dead few days ago.

3. A young criminal was killed in a shootout and later the deceased's sister apparently forced her children to consume weed killer before taking it herself.

4. Today, a 22-year old man hanged himself after he was found guilty of killing his own mother and stuffing her body in a bag, under the sink. The cops are now accused of killing the man instead.

5. A young lad was shot to death after going amuk in a village armed with a chicken knife, just because he was left stranded in a karaoke outlet by his friends.

5. Cops are under pressure for allegedly using the 'shoot-to-kill' method when dealing with armed criminals.

6. I am not a law major but I did watch some American teles and films about how cops over there deal with armed criminals.

7. 'Suicide by cops' is a situation where an armed criminal actually pretends to shoot the cop (pointing the gun/weapon to the cop), and in the end, he is shot to death.

8. For this scenario, the cop will get away for being prosecuted for acting 'above the law'.

9. What if the cops and criminals are caught in a shoot-out rampage? Do you think it's easy to actually shoot someone without having to kill someone?

10. What if the criminals are notorious for raping, armed-robbery, killing, drug-trafficking (and causing more deaths) and they are on top of the Most Wanted List?

11. Should we just be 'nice' to these criminals? Or just kill them off?

12. This is one of the loopholes in the man-made law system.

13. While there is a need to protect the rights of criminals as citizens, we don't want to overeact on how actually they should be treated.

14. Do you think these criminals care about your lives when they are after your money/jewelleries/etc?

15. For me, if the cop shot dead a notorious killer, he should be lauded, not questioned. It is a sad thing losing a family member, but isn't it more sad to see your own flesh and blood roaming the town, killing, raping, extorting money from other people?

16. This is a general opinion. If I were to touch on case to case basis, it would be foolish because I don't even know what really happened.

17. For me, criminals are criminals, if their deaths are necessary to make this country a better place, so be it.

18. Think about the victim's family more and you will see why sometimes it should be that way.

19. Give some credits to the cops. Not all of them are friggin tw*ts.

20. Go to the source of the problem, reduce crimes by introducing stricter punishments.

Komen saya dalam petikan terbaru TDM - Sunnah wal jama'ah

Saya pun terkejut bagaimana Ustaz Asri pun hendak diberkas.

Namun, saya sebenarnya dah lama agak suatu hari nanti beliau akan ditangkap juga kerana kononnya membawa ajaran 'wahabi' kepada orang Malaysia.

Ini adalah pendapat saya. Jika fikirkan secara ilmiah dan aqli, adakah Allah S.W.T melarang manusia beribadat kepada-Nya dan selalu mengingati-Nya?

Sebagai contoh, jika kita lakukan wirid dan doa selepas solat, adakah ia berdosa? Adakah jika diadakan tahlil, mengajak anak-anak soleh dan solehah mendoakan kesejahteraan si mati suatu DOSA?

Benar ada suatu hadith menyatakan bahawa hendaklah beribadat mengikut cara Nabi Muhammad tetapi ia dikatakan bukan secara rigid, pada pendapat saya. Yang penting sekali kita sentiasa mengingati Allah S.W.T. dengan zikir-zikir.

Sebagai contoh, dahulunya pada zaman Nabi, tidak pula ada kelengkapan radio atau cd. Tetapi kini, jika seseorang Muslim itu mahu berzikir ketika memandu kereta dengan alunan cd zikir dan wirid serta ayat-ayat suci Al-Quraan, maka adakah itu salah pada mata 'wahabi'?

Saya berkata begini bukanlah saya menuduh Dr. Asri ini pembawa ajaran 'wahabi' yang saya lihat begitu rigid atau tegas dalam ibadat.

Saya lebih suka jika Islam ini dibawakan dengan niat memartabatkan Islam dan mengaplikasikan ajarannya demi kesejahteraan dan kejayaan semua manusia.

Apa yang berlaku di antara Sunni dan Syiah hanyalah politik semata-mata. Bagi saya, Islam hanyalah satu. Tiada Sunni, tiada Syiah, tiada Hadhari, tiada Islam PAS dan lain-lain.

Sebagai pembetulan, Islam Hadhari bukanlah ajaran baru tetapi kempen yang Pak Lah mahu rakyat terima-pakai supaya Islam ini tidak nampak ektrem sepertimana kini.

Janganlah kerana benci kepada seseorang itu, kita putar-belitkan pandangannya.

UKEC Homecoming for Budu

It was Friday and I was insisting my football mates to play our weekly football on Saturday so that my weekend would be filled.

I would be bored as a Man Utd’s game if I had nothing to do for the weekend. It’s not that I have a wife or a child to hang out with like everybody else.

Having said that, Saturday night would be a poker night. But for the day it seemed gloom… until I heavy-heartedly accepted the UKEC invitation for this talk by my KMYS PNB senior, Nik Nazmi who is currently the ADUN of Seri Setia.

It’s not because of Budu (as the rest used to be calling him because these kids were calling him YB YB YB) that made me a bit hesitant to join the event. It’s simply because it was organised by a group of student ‘leaders’ or wannabe-leaders of tomorrow called UKEC that made me felt a bit uncomfortable. Previous Facebook discussion about ‘Allah’ being used by Herald Bahasa version with one of UKEC ‘leaders’ didn't help at all to convince me of their so-called ‘greatness’.

But well, yeah, for the first time, I did join their event, with the objective to actually write about that event. And so, I’m writing this, because it’s the Monday blues, with no work to do in Guy Carpenter, quite weird when everybody else is working their ass off.

So, on that Saturday afternoon, as usual, I didn’t wanna be late… because its not good when interrupting the session. So I thought. But I was not late actually. Smq gave me a call and he was with Budu, were only on their way from Holborn and it was already 2:10pm. I could see the rest of the people, about 15 of them, lepakking in the S221 room, waiting anxiously for the great YB.

2:10pm – Head count = 15 people. 1 Indian, 2 Malays and the rest Chinese. Shannon Yeoh the blogger is here. Many of them students.

I wonder why the composition was like that? The Chinese again showing how good their time management is? Or, simply the Chinese are more keen to change Malaysia.

2:15pm – While waiting for Budu to arrive, I had realised one thing which is quite crafty I must say, about the logo of UKEC. It has a bit of a PKR in it to be honest. The so called ‘eye of Zion’, the two crescents, are actually visible from the UKEC logo. I smiled. And it was a lonely smile because I sensed the mood of the audience to be a bit sombre, probably tired of waiting.

2:30pm – the event finally kicks off, Chairperson Teow Yoong Jing, from UKEC, is an avid Pakatan Rakyat fan, evidently from the banner from her blog.

Headcount = about 30-ish. Probably less. Not impressive. Was expecting more. Chinese proportion still overpowered the rest with only 4 Malays and 2 Indians. Now I am judging this group already. Is it because they don’t have many Indian or Malay friends? Or again, are the Chinese more inclined for a ‘change’ in Malaysia?

Why? Does it matter, Jeg, about what race you belong to? Well, even Budu was still talking about races when giving his speech. One of the few things he talked about are Selangor State to make the DUN independent, all Pakatan Rakyat party components sitting together for the December convention (bear in mind this has not been done ever by Barisan Nasional) to discuss about the common principles that they will uphold if they were to stay together, targeting the young voters, the constitution of Malaysia and the general election March 2008.

I am not going to elaborate more about what he has told us. Nothing special really. Because I’ve heard that before. Maybe because I have been reading a lot. However, its good to know that PKR is still keeping our Constitution as they promised in the General Election 2008, stating that ‘the Constitution is what that shapes our country’, which is fair enough, but maybe not favouring some members of the floor, who might thought Pakatan is to do away with policies that favour the Bumiputras.

Budu did give his personal view on the education system, in which I agree. He always believes there should be a single-streamed school for all Malaysians to promote unity. However, his concern about quality being the main obstacle to do away with vernacular schools is somewhat far-fetched. I have a friend, and I bet he is the best SPM student during my time, went to national school. He is now in Cambridge under the Agong Scholarship, doing PhD. I myself went to SRK St. Francis and I thought the teachers were superb!

The question over the quality, being the reason why many Chinese want to keep Chinese schools is just an excuse to me. Having said that, I am no saying we should abolish Chinese and Tamil Schools. I think we should keep them at primary level only, as stated in the Constitution. And it will give the opportunity to even Non-Chinese students to learn about their language and have the best of both worlds.

But to have Chinese Secondary schools, will polarise us more, forever.

Coming back to the event, names were brought up. Badrul, Saiful, Zulkifli, Hasan Ali, Taib Mahmud, ‘son-in-law of someone’ (I wonder why all Malays?).

Well these people are perceived as liabilities in Pakatan Rakyat or the nation. At least from Budu’s and PR hardcore fans point of view.

But kudos to Budu for not bashing them too much because it will only make him look like a typical politician.

I think it’s worth taking note here that PKR’s way to win the hearts of young Malaysians are really, really good. They are planning for an internship programme for youngsters who want to experience about what a political assistant do. (Saiful Bukhari was meant to do this really but he was just a bad apple. Or a ripe one? :P ) And Budu being Budu. He is young and now an ADUN. No wonder these young ‘leaders’ are so inspired. They feel, if Budu can do it, they can too. I believe that’s the mood that they are having right now. Which gives a positive impact to the new coalition.

I wonder what are other programmes being held by UMNO London apart from organising football tournaments, free breaking-fast in Ramadhan in collaboration with Shell and the latest being Eid Celebration, again with Shell. Why can’t we have UMNO’s Ketua Pemuda KJ coming down to London and meeting the students like Budu did recently? Arrogant maybe? Or we are not worth it since we don’t actually vote?

Anyway towards the end of the event, I can say that about 90% of the members of the floor are hoping for a change in Malaysia, if not, Pakatan Rakyat believers.

When Zulkifli Nordin’s name was mentioned, almost everyone in the room laughed as if he is a bad person. He is still a PKR MP. What he did was not that bad, when he was defending the rights of Muslims, going against Bar Council trying to officially change Lina Joy’s religion status in her MyKad and pushing the case as the precedence to changing the law about Malays being able to be Non-Muslims, as opposed to the Constitution.

But again, since there were only 4 Malays in the room, these people might not understand what Islam is about, and what the Constitution is about still. They are young students and still learning anyway. I just hope that these people are not being brainwashed to not knowing the truth and trying to be impartial a bit not to blindly following what they thought is right, in the expense of their judgment being clouded by hatred and emotion.

“I think it’s about us, knowing and understanding other people’s beliefs and religions, not condemning them. It’s a sensitive issue for us to argue about it” Budu said. (something like that, same substance but different words used). And I spontaneously gave a wink at one of the so-called leaders in UKEC who was present, the same person who went on arguing ‘Allah’ being used in Herald in Facebook..

Again when Hasan Ali’s name was mentioned, again the crowd laughed. But for many Muslims, Hasan Ali is just doing his job as a Muslim leader. And since he is from PAS, it’s not that hard to believe what he did.

My take on this is that, most of the members of the floor; don’t actually know their Malay/Muslim friends. I blame the school system!

But it’s worth mentioning here there was an Indian guy (who I assume to be neutral), who asked about why Sept 16 was made at the first place.

Budu was fast to wisely say that PKR had to go on offensive but admitted that when Perak crossovers happened, it has somehow affected PKR, if not Anwar’s credibility. His way of giving a ceramah is not a ‘typical politician’ way, which is very good actually. He is always ready to give his own opinions, despite how it can be against the party’s principles and ready to admit the flaws that his party has. He even admitted that he could be bias when commenting something where some people might think it’s a political blunder, but for me, hats off to that!

This is a unique way to win young voters. If he stays this way, avoiding any blips like Liverpool (the team he supports), then he has a lot of potential.

One thing that I forgot to ask him was his take on Anwar Ibrahim. After Anwar’s many blunders recently (Sabah issue, endorsing crossovers, playing hide and seek with Sodomy II), it would be great to know about his opinion on his previous boss.

Overall it was an Okay event. Maybe a better mix of the crowd could make it a great one. I bid him farewell and asked him to send my regards to his wife.

Beer-drinking - again

I am very surprised there are large numbers of people in support for Alcoholism.

I am living with the English people and they have a very strong beer-drinking culture and are these Malaysians trying to adopt this kind of 'healthy' culture from England just to look 'cool'?

Almost every Thursday there will be a drinking session (some call it Happy Hour in Malaysia) at about 4 p.m., and I do join them whenever possible.

My drink? Non-alcoholic cider, Coca Cola or Non-alcoholic cocktails.

Do they find me weird for not drinking? Probably not. After I told them I don't drink alcohol.

Do I get their respect? Yes. Because I was being honest and strong-willed when comes to practicing my religion. They even said that it's good I don't take alcohol because it's unhealthy.

These are the same people who have been drinking for thousands of years you see. And yet they concede it's unhealthy!

Okay, other letters in Malaysiakini might suggest the writers are atheists, by suggesting that 'it's up to the individual to decide to drink or not'.

My decision not-to-drink was first based on the teaching of my religion, Islam, and as I grow older, I know alcohol is bad for everyone when consumed as drinks.

I have seen their faces, how some can be quite blunt, volatile, randy and aggressive when they are drunk... and I am supposed to accept the fact that he's drunk that's why he groped my girlfriend when dancing?... Or rape my cousin?

Hell no! They shouldn't drink at the first place. It's like people nowadays (many Malaysians included) are being in-denial about the bad things about alcoholism, simply because they love drinking it. They don't want anyone take their love away from them. Quite obvious innit?

So, what about drugs? Ecstasy, shabu, marijuana (weed as they call it), they are easily available now in the clubs in Malaysia. They make you feel good and they seem 'harmless', so you are saying its up to the individual to decide?

How about a 12-year old kid, being introduced to smoking weed, and he thought it was harmless. You just let him decide? You don't need law-enforcement to ban drugs or alcoholic drinks to people like him?

Self-regulation MY FOOT!

Do you think the banning of cigarettes in convenience stores to under-18 actually works? These people are only interested with maximising profits!

Now, I am not suggesting a full ban on alcohol. Maybe there is a need of a certain law that will have the CCTV cameras picked and viewed randomly to see if the stores are not selling alcohol to Muslims and cigarettes to under 18s. I think that's the best we can do at the moment.

Oh by the way, there is one thing missing with the budget 2010. The increase in tax for demerit goods like alcohol and cigarettes.

In conclusion, I do not smoke, I do not drink because I think its unhealthy and I don't want my children to do those as well. I am not pious, an Ustaz or someone from PAS, but I don't do alcohol because I believe there is Allah, I am a proud Muslim and I fully understand why its bad for everyone.

So stop trying to 'convert' us non-drinkers with your petty human rights to decide what is right or wrong. I do have my right to practice my religion and so does Kartika. Now that is human rights.

Beer-drinking is bad. 'Nuff' said.

Tidak ketahuan pula saya apakah hukuman sebaiknya kepada 'Rasul Melayu' ini. Adakah lebih baik jika berpandukan kepada ajaran Islam yang sememangnya adil?

Kepada orang bukan Islam atau orang Islam yang cetek ilmu pengetahuannya tentang Islam (SIS khususnya), selidiklah diri sendiri dan tanyakan, 'siapalah kita untuk memberi pandangan kepada sesuatu isu yang kita sendiri tidak arif? Bagaimana pula anda rasa jika agama dan pegangan anda disoal sebegitu? Tidak marahkah anda jika orang yang tidak berpengetahuan tentang agama anda mempersoalkan mengapa anda perlu 'menyembah patung' atau pandangan sekular yang telah menjadi pegangan anda selama ini?

Hormati dan sayangilah orang di sekeliling anda. Fahamilah tentang agama dan budaya masing-masing supaya tidak ada lagi perbalahan sesama kita.

National STPM Top Scorer, Jia Hui had her father wrote to TheStar dated 16 July 2009:

"The prestigious London School of Economics (LSE) was not on its new prestigious university list, dated March 30, 2009. In fact, foreign university applications for the 2009 intake closed before the date on the list.

I explained to its officer that the approved University of Melbourne, which my daughter had rejected earlier, was much easier to enter. My daughter said LSE is famous for actuarial science and is one of the top three universities for social science, ahead of Oxford, Cambridge, and Melbourne.

The officer said that PSD based its selection on overall university ranking, not on specific courses. The officer added that all the 20 students chosen in this round were Chinese and there was no issue of racial quota. As a national top scorer, my daughter lost to 20 students of the same race.

My daughter is disappointed and has lost her confidence. She is confused on what is defined as achievement. As a parent, I am unable to explain to her what is fair and justified. I am also unable to tell her whether our national education system is inferior or if the scholarship award process is faulty?"

Jeg Hui to Jia Hui:

1. I don't think PSD literally said that LSE is not a prestigious university. I think what they meant to say was that LSE is not the best in providing Actuarial education in terms of syllabus cover and potential exemptions offered.

2. Why reject Melbourne Uni? This is a selfish, ungrateful act. People are finding so hard to get scholarships nowadays. Just because you are one of the best students you think can always choose where to go? This is quite arrogant of you. The fact that you said LSE is better than Melbourne is not right at all.

3. As an actuarial student, he/she would go for a university that offers maximum number of exemptions, mostly maximum of 8 for Core Techniques subjects from their degree. Currently, the Actuarial Profession offers:

London School of Economics

It was a different kind of flight this time when I was travelling from KUL to DBX for a transit back to London when there was the three of us, Singaporean Mr Wong, Iranian Max 'Miller' and the Malaysian me sitting in the same row 15-right.

They didn't give me the right first impressions as they were busy discussing about Max's personal encounter with some 'extreme' Malays during his 4 months stay in Malaysia.

Mr Wong, commented further on how he disagrees with some 'extreme' Muslims being so 'rigid' on eating in the same table as non-Muslims because of some pork-issues.

"Cannot touch pork!"

Max kept on repeating how Muslim Malays can be so extreme.

I only offered my opinion in regards with 'extreme' Muslim Malays when dealing with the Zakat fund in which Mr Wong agreed, adding that religious leaders, be it Muslims or Christians or Buddhists (Dalai Lama was mentioned) are 'fat cats' making money out of their respective religions.

We also talked about social problems in our countries but Mr Wong, being outspoken over racial issues in Malaysia had given some strong but sensible comments about how Malaysia can improve as a nation.

We also talked about the crooked bridge with Mahathir being the center of our discussion.

When asked if Singapore is paying so cheap of a price when importing water from Malaysia, Mr Wong agrees. "There is always a room for renegotiation. We know that we are paying at a very cheap price, but Mahathir was not using the right method to discuss. He threatened to switch off the tap but Lee Kuan Yew retaliated by saying 'we will go in and take the water'. We are always willing to pay more since we are a rich nation, but there was no discussion during Mahathir's time. Only fighting."

Mahathir has always been at odds with LKY. No discussion!

Meanwhile, I finally realised why Max was angry with Malay Muslims. It is because that Max is quite a liberal Muslim, his lifestyle will not suit Malay Muslims as most Malay Muslims don't drink alcohol and are biggest fans of Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.

Max is having troubles going in and out the country. Being a lecturer who loves travel he has every reason to disagree with Muslim Malaysians who support the Iranian President.

Apparently Max real name is not Max nor Miller. But Mahdi. He is about 30-40 years old.

Mr. Wong is a big fan of Zaid Ibrahim and also Nik Aziz, although he sometimes dislike the latter's Islamic views.

There is one thing that I find really interesting when he told me about a story of an Indian MP in Singapore questioning the 'Special privileges' of the minorities which regards to education and called this privileges to be scrapped.

Yes, there is a special rights for Malays in Singapore I didn't know that.

LKY ticked off the Indian MP by slamming him that he had touched the 'sacred cow'. "This special privileges is enshrined in Singapore's constituency." In a country like Singapore, after a full force of demonising by Mahathir, people in Malaysia, Malays in particular, think that Malays are marginalised in Singapore.

"Under this special rights, Malays are given free education up until university," Mr Wong said.

Yes, PPSMI was also discussed. Mr Wong thinks Malaysia is going backwards by abolishing PPSMI. I added that it should be PPSMII with IT subject included.

"Is this a Mouse or Tetikus?" I barked in annoyance.

I saluted Singapore's brave move to unify all schools into one national school. Some Chinese schools in Singapore kept their Chinese names, but most subjects are taught in English. They can learn Mandarin or Tamil as a third language. Malay language is a compulsory subject.

No wonder the Singaporeans speak English better than us, Singlish or not.

Wa lau wei!

The 2-hour 3-way discussion ended when everyone fell asleep or started watching their favourite movies during the night flight.

I came to a conclusion that again, it's all about respect and knowing each other. Never ever give hate and prejudice the chance to take over our judgments.

Just because Mahathir taught us to hate Singapore (or Lee Kuan Yew), doesn't mean we have to hate Singaporeans.

Just because someone is Iranian, doesn't mean he supports the current President.

We all know that Muslims aren't supposed to eat pork or drink liquor. What you can do is respect their faith and don't simply brand these people extremists since you do eat pork and drink liquor.

We all know that Hindus don't eat beef and they believe that cow is a sacred animal and they do build temples to pray. What you can do is respect their faith and don't simply ask them to go back to India or slaughter this animal in front of them just to provoke them.

We all know that Christians do have their missionary brigades around the world that doesn't mean we should slaughter them and eat their meat just like an incident in Samoa many-many years ago. We also shouldn't allow Al-Islam journalists to snoop around the Christians activities to sell their magazines.

We all know that there are aethists around the world but that doesn't mean they can condemn people's belief in God. They should learn to respect other people's beliefs since most of these people believe in God since they were very young and vowed to have faith in God till the day they die.

How Malay is a Malay Today?

According to the Federal Constitution of Malaysia Article 160,“Malay” means a person who professes the religion of Islam, habitually speaks the Malay language, conforms to Malay custom and -

(a) was before Merdeka Day born in the Federation or in Singapore or born of parents one of whom was born in the Federation or in Singapore, or was on that day domiciled in the Federation or in Singapore; or
(b) is the issue of such a person;

Question is what kind of “Malay” do we see nowadays? Maybe it’s wise to look at this definition to see if a Malay today really is… a Malay.

To be claimed as a Malay, the person must profess the religion of Islam. “Profess” in this context would mean “to affirm belief in” or “to practice”. As Muslims, during this holy month of Ramadhan, they are urged by Allah S.W.T to fast during the day, read the Quraan, perform Tarawih prayers or Tahajjud among other things so that they can be closer to Allah.

This Ramadhan alone we saw the following incidents made by Malay Muslims which are against the teachings of Islam:

The notorious cow-head protest against the free to practice any religion as supported by the Quraan and Hadith.
Insulting another religion by stepping and spitting a sacred animal’s head, according to the Hindu beliefs.
Disrespecting the animal by calling it stupid while Allah sees all animals are of great benefits to mankind.
Name callings and unable to control emotion during a leaders-residents dialogue when actually fasting teaches us to be patient.
During a by-election final speech, a prominent leader was seen accusing another man of KILLING a woman without strong evidence – Fitnah and gossiping are strongly prohibited especially during Ramadhan.
Some were trying to take the rights away from a Muslim mother-of-two wanting to be a good Muslimah by accepting the Syariah Law punishment for drinking.
Muslim men caught not fasting without showing evidence of rukhsah (exclusions)
Muslims caught drinking alcohol, having close proximity (khalwat), taking drugs, gambling and zina (adultery).

Thus, can these people still be called Malays as they do not practice Islam correctly?

Next, a Malay should habitually speaks the Malay language. However some even too shameful to even speak the National Language for example:

Trying in vain to copy the slang of the local people in London even though they are talking to fellow Malaysians.
“WHATT??? I mean… Whu-k? (British slang)” - classic Londoner-wannabe blooper.

And finally, a Malay should conform to Malay custom… don’t make me started on this one because it will only trouble the Malaysiakini editors to fit the pages. Okay I will give one quote as an example:

“What are you wearing? Baju Melayu? Ish, you are so KAMPUNG!”

Salam Sejahtera, my Selangor Menteri Besar. I hope you are in a pink of health while working hard for the people during this holy Ramadhan.

I know you are currently facing a lot of troubles especially from the recent ruckus over relocation of the S19 temple, the beer-banning and not to forget the suggestion of the Zakat fund to be made available for the state.

It didn't come as a shock to me to be honest because growing up in Selangor, I still know that people here are still not ready for some dramatic changes being made in the way Selangor should be governed.

Of course every Selangor residents wants everything works for the better, but we are still so young and naive over certain issues.

To start with, the Muslims were left shell-shocked over your suggestion for the state to interfere with the Pusat Zakat Selangor fund. Some called you stupid, some called you trying to please the non-Muslims too much, some asked you to go back and read the fundementals of Zakat.

I called my mom weeks ago and the first 'gossip' during our conversation was about this Zakat matter.

Let me remind you briefly of the 8 groups of people (asnaf) who are allowed to gain from the Zakat fund. They are all based on the holy Quraan (9:60)

1. The needy - Fuqara'
2. Extreme poor Muslims - Al-Masakin
3. Those employed to collect - Aamileen (Pusat Zakat staff salaries)
4. Muslim converts - Muallafatul Quloob
5. To free the slaves - Ar-Riqaab
6. Those in debt - Al Ghaarimeen
7. In the way of Allah - Fi Sabeelillah
8. Wayfarer - Ibnus-Sabeel

So it was a blunder by YBhg. MB to even proposing it. I hope such things can be avoided in the future.

Moving on, the beer banning issue in Shah Alam. This was suggested by Dr. Hassan Ali (PAS) and it was proposed innocently, to respect Muslims in the area. Again, your judgment was under scrutiny. Please bear in mind that these people are Muslims who are so afraid that their children would find easy access to alcohol beverages. They were not paid by UMNO or any BN component parties to cause chaos whatsoever. My take on this is that you should listen to the people in the area, not trying to please EVERYONE. Alcohol is bad for everyone anyway, Muslims or not.

And finally, the temple issue. I was gutted by the way the S23 residents were acting bringing along a cow's head in a street protest, spitting and stepping on it. I know they are now playing the blame game for the cow head among themselves but I think it was just a split second decision from one of them, getting the cow-head from the local butcher and bringing it along to provoke the Hindus. Stern action should be taken to the people responsible for this as a cow is deemed as a sacred animal for the Hindus and Islam does not condone the act of humiliating any animals. (Yes, pigs and dogs included).

Some hardcore Pakatan fans and voters put the blame on UMNO by lying to everyone saying those people were from Pekida or some BN-related NGOs while I truly believe these peole are genuinely from S23. And so what if they so happened to support PKR, PAS or UMNO? Thats normal. I also believe that these are the same people who went berserk during the dialogue with you earlier today which I think did not respect the holy Ramadhan. It was a good initiative to hold a dialogue but was it not too little too late?

My question is however, is there really a NEED to relocate the temple? It's 150 years old maybe it should stay there and become one of Malaysia's heritage buildings and maybe some reworked can be done on it? Why the hassle to relocate the temple?

The mistake by Y.Bhg MB was to relocate the temple without the S23's people consent or any prior explanation. They feel betrayed and think you are arrogant for making decisions behind their backs. What happened to this 'Giving the Power Back to the People' or 'Ketuanan Rakyat' concept?

Well, I hope everything will then be alright after wise solutions are implemented. No offence to the guy, but I prefer you than Khir Toyo to lead Selangor.

Or maybe we need a new guy if you don't buck up soon. But please no more Khir Toyo. Ever.

My advice to you, work sincerely, you don't have to try hard to please everyone. This is not you.

I was left dumbfounded by the way the Pakatan reps have been acting since the Perak takeover.

Did not Anwar Ibrahim glorify the act of 'frogs' jumping ship by boastfully parading the trojan horse MP Nasarudin?

Later, he claimed that he had the numbers to take over the federal government in September 2008.

Move on! If you really want someone to blame, blame your national leader.If he hadn't encourage the toppling of the government in the most immoral (but legal) method, then all this brouhaha would then be justified.

Anwar made a serious blunder.

As Pakatan loyalists, the Perak reps must move on as quickly as possible and take good care of the people who elected them.That's the reason why they were elected in the first place.

I believe people have had enough of all this political turmoil happening around the country. It is time to act wisely. Not emotionally.

By the way, I personally think that crossovers/defections shouldn't be allowed in a healthy democracy.The people chose you, and it might be based mostly on the party.

Defection would mean deception to the people. And for this, it's immoral.

*8.45 pm - Tadarus session till Isya' times (looking at 45 minutes to one hour session). Then we will have the Tarawih and Moreh.

Kartika's 'controversy'

It's a non-issue. If she has already pleaded guilty over the matter, so under the Malaysian Syariah Law, cane her. Remember that caning and whipping is a different matter.

Doing it in public? Depends though. Does the Syariah Law condone to such punishment to be done in public?

If people are not happy with this law, vote for your preferred representatives, ask them to debate the matter in the Parliament, then if you can get 2/3 vote-majority going against it, then this sort of law can be abolished (the whole lot of Syariah Law for that matter), and only IF the Agong gives the green light.

Why is it being made such a big deal? Even the people who don't know anything about Syariah Law have freely made their comments on the Internet and other media like Malaysiakini Yoursay.

'The whole world is watching'..? Why do we have to care about what the World has to say? The World is not God. I think most people refer The World as the Westerners. Let me remind the Muslims that what you should care is what Allah has to say.

As for the Non-Muslims, why do you care so much? This is Islam. We must learn how to respect other people's religions. And come on, it's just caning! I was caned before for making noises in the primary school. I was even humiliated in front of the whole KYSM for allegedly 'torturing' a boy. But both had made me a better student even though I felt victimised at first.

What if one day Muslims make mockery of your religion? However, Muslims are not allowed to make mockery of other religions. Prophet Muhammad PBUH never did that. So it's forbidden to make fun of other religions.

The caning has not affected the Non-Muslims at all. Kartika pleaded guilty and wants the punishment to be carried out. That's what she wants. I don't know if she's being sincere or not because there was no video recording for me to judge. According to her transcripts, she wants to be caned. So what is the real fuss here? Let her get what she wants.

There is a hadith saying that one Muslim/Muslimah should be caned if found guilty of consuming alcoholic drinks. So, Syariah Law is just following the Quran and hadith when making this law.

Again, if you don't like this Syariah Law, ask your MPs to vote against it. Get 2/3 majority, then throw it away in the bin! Don't go around shouting and 'kepoh'-ing like Mr and Mrs Know-it-All.

SO PLEASE STOP ALL THIS DRAMA.

The title of this entry should be changed to Kartika's Rights to be a Good Muslimah.

You got a knack of saying things that wasn't said.These are the people who died in detention, whose death was not documented properly and in most cases, are nameless victims. If you follow up with the events/news, you'll realize that itz not made up and not "just talk kedai kopi".

I was really angry when I read this.

I am already dissatisfied the way the Baitulmal being handled, now Khalid wants to make it worse?

Since when the Selangor state administration are allowed for a piece of cake of Baitulmal?

Since when that they are allowed to call themselves asnaf (people who can claim Zakat)?

No wonder there were pictures of Khalid with the Pusat Zakat Selangor recently. He wants his government a portion of the zakat fund.

I call all Selangor state excos and members to reject this proposal by Khalid.

Ada 8 asnaf zakat iaitu:

Fakir - orang yang tidak mampu bekerja untuk sara diri

Miskin - orang yang mampu bekerja tetapi tidak cukup untuk sara diri

Amil - pengurus zakat - gaji pengurus zakat, no bonus, gaji seadanya (more like non-profit organisation punya gaji)

Muallaf - Orang yang baharu memeluk Islam. So jangan lupa yang baru memeluk Islam, anda layak menuntut zakat.

Nota: Proses permohonan zakat di Malaysia sgt tedious. Kena isi borang la apa la. Kadang2 tu, tak adil rasa kita tgk org yang memerlukan bantuan perubatan tak dapat terima zakat kononnya tak layak digelar fakir miskin. Be logical. Kalau org tu tak mampu bayar, maknanya dia boleh digolongkan dalam konteks gharim.

Pusat Zakat Selangor kutip zakat RM100 Juta setahun. Tetapi agihan pula taktau bagaimana. Bukak statistiks diorg jumlah kutipan ada, jumlah agihan tiada. dodgy? husnuzon lah takat ni. tp Pusat Zakat satu Malaysia kena:

1. transparent (tunjuk semua stats - jumlah kutipan/jumlah agihan lengkap)
2. tunjuk gaji pengurus zakat - setaraf corporate ke non-profit organisation?
3. satukan tabung satu malaysia, sebab org Selangor (ramai kaya) boleh tolong org kelantan (ramai miskin). So i guess takda isu kutipan berlebihan daripada agihan.
4. tabung/dana pusat zakat MUST be Pay and Go (which means, Pusat Zakat should not be allowed to INVEST the money)

1. I have very little knowledge about Iskandar Malaysia.

2. All information that I know about Iskandar Malaysia was only obtained from the web.

3. I am also aware about Singapore wanting to invest in Iskandar Malaysia. Well let them come and put their money to Malaysia. Although you don't have to sell the lands to them.

4. Upon a quick, simple inspection using Google Earth, Iskandar Malaysia spanning from Pontian, Senai, Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang will be literally and figuratively larger than Singapore.

5. However, I can't fail to notice how dark, dirty and shit-like the water surrounding The Malaysia-Singapore Causeway.

6. I think we should revisit the Crooked Bridge plan, as long as it will not benefit Mahathir and his cronies one single cent. If we build it, Malaysians should prosper, not the selected bangsawan few.

7. I was also informed that we only sell 1000 gallons of raw water for only 3 sen or 0.42 Singapore dollar, and then we buy filtered water from Singapore back. What great business is that?

8. Melaka buys 1000 gallons of raw water from Johor for 30 sen. It seems that we love Singapore so much or maybe we are too scared of them. They got bigger guns, you know!

9. Going back to Iskandar Malaysia, I have a few suggestions although I am skeptical the Malaysian government will ever listen to a puny blogger like me.

10. First of, Pontian towards Kukup can be developed as a great tourist attraction. The beach is alright and the water is calm. I have never been to Pontian but I am informed that it is already a tourist destination, notably the Pulau Kukup. Long beach overlooking a quite big Pulau Kukup stretching towards Tanjung Piai where a lighthouse can be buit there to help ships going towards.... the causeway! (will discuss this later)

11. Maybe a theme park can be placed in Pontian (or JB) as well. Pontian can be theme park city while Kukup will be retain the quitness and traditional Kampung village for the tourist to chill in.

12. Ships can then enter the Johor strait and a great harbour can be improved in the white area from the map called Port of Tanjung Pelepas.

13. I do not know how deep the sea level in Johor Strait, but smaller ships (and maybe bigger ships can go pass through the Second Link Bridge (being replaced by the new suspension bridge) towards Johor Bahru.

14. Ships can then go to Pasir Gudang straight from Tanjung Piai (vice versa). The Johor Bahru Causeway will be replaced by a suspension bridge, crooked or not to allow water flowing smoothly and improve ecological quality in that area. Again this can also allow ships going pass the strait with ease especially when they are transporting goods from Pasir Gudang.

15. All of my suggestions above shouldn't have anything to do with Singapore as we are only developing our side of the country (except for the bridges).

16. I really think we should ask something back from Singapore for doing them a favour GIVING raw water at a very, very, very cheap price. i.e. like and UFTI or GIFT for some peculiar reasons.

17. Oh wait a minute, we don't want anything from them, we are only developing our own nation inside our OWN sovereignty.

18. Must be wise lah, kawan!

19. So maybe it's wise to renegotiate the water fee since we don't actually benefit anything from that deal. We can filter our own water for God sake! As a 'ransom', tell Singapore to build the brudges together. Report to a world environment authority giving them evidence on how shit the water is now surrounding the causeway. Independant tribunal can also be sought (Pedra Branca was successful for them although we were fighting over stupid rocks).

20. Just look at how dark and dirty the water is from a satelite image:

However. I still think abolishing PPSMI is not a good way to move forward.

How hard PPSMI can be, students MUST take the challenge.

Funny quotes/incidents proving that we are all the SAME as we are all Malaysian Politcians.
1. BN spoke about how the alternative media like Malaysiakini, Harakah daily and others being biased and must be controlled or ban because 'they could cause confusion and generate hate'. Even bloggers are not spared. Pakatan, defended all these media because the they support its agenda.

--- Pakatan (notably Anwar and Lim Guan Eng ban UTUSAN journalists from hearing their press conference!

Verdict: Freedom of speech from BOTH sides my ass.

2. Some UMNO leaders being branded as racists and would usually say something like "Go back to China/India" or "Go back to where you came from" or "Kalau tak suka boleh keluar Malaysia" out of anger (and stupidity)

--- One Hindraf (championed by Pakatan) leader named C Tharmaraj today asked Lim Guan Eng (DAP) to 'step down as Chief Minister of Penang and go back to where he came from (Malacca)'

Verdict: We are all racists still even if it takes 0.001% of your soul, because we are from different ethnics and backgrounds, just live with it! Malaysians Malaysia my ass. Keep your identity intact while respecting other people's beliefs and cultures and we will make our nation great (again).

3. BN components care about their people of different ethnics. UMNO wants to protect the rights of the Malays, MCA representing the Chinese, MIC helping the Indians etc.

--- Pakatan say they are different. They are not really race-based and will NEVER use the race cards. Well not quite right.. PKR still claim they will protect the Constitution including the Malay rights and the existence of Kings and Rulers. NEP will abolished, yes, but it's not really abolishing it, but literally RENAMING it. PKR is still predominantly Malays. DAP, how many Non-Chinese is in DAP? They even have websites in Chinese. Youtube comments and pages are in Chinese language as well. How many Malays are in DAP? So of course they want equality because it will favour Non-Malays with the demise of hardcore poor as well (who are mostly Bumiputras). One MP from DAP even had the b*lls (or should I say t*ts because the MP doesn't have them) to say that the government should allocate more fund to help young entrepreneurs regardless of their financial backgrounds (again, not helping poor people! WHAT are you??). Meanwhile, Hadi (PAS-Pakatan) today has said that removing the 30% Bumi quota by PM will weaken Bumis. PAS members are almost 100% Malay Muslims.

Verdict: Race-based politics outdated? You people ahh.. so in denial! And yeah, PAS (Malays/Muslims) and DAP (Chinese,Indians/Secular, Socialists) will never work together because they are so different! Nuff said.

4. Corruption corruption corruption... People always blame Barisan leaders as MOST corrupt. Which is true but how about the people from the other side?

--- Fairuz (PKR) had a corruption case regarding quarries in Penang. Well, he is not alone. One young PKR leader has asked around young Malay entrepreneurs if they would like to open business with his help. He blatantly said, "ini bukan rasuah.. tapi PROFIT SHARING lah!" (translated - this is not corruption but profit sharing will do). Man that is worse than UNDER TABLE one-off money. You will get lump sum money in a traditional bribery but profit sharing is far worse! Say if the young company made RM1 Million so how much the company has to share with you? 50%? What about next year? another round of 'profit' for only lobbying the project? Next year? For the next 10,20 years? Kaya lah kau camtu goyang kaki saja! Every year plak tu! What have you done to help these young businessmen? Virtually nothing if you ask me. And what's up with this DAP case of buying RM4000 karaoke set? Every single cent also want to take ah? Siao lu!

Verdict: People still want to get rich quick even if it's dirty money. But of course not all leaders like that.

On unity government...

I don't know what Abdul Hadi Awang is trying to do. Did he just realise that the Pakatan way would be a more liberal and anti-Malay/Muslim way of living in Malaysia because of the presence of more dominant parties PKR and DAP (difference of ideologies)? Or simply he could smell an opportunity to join the Federal Government the quickest? Or maybe SINCERELY wanting to bring all Muslims in Malaysia together looking at how Muslims are divided in Malaysia? (UMNO-Muslims, UMNO-seculars, PAS-pro muzakarah Muslims, PAS anti-muzakarah, PAS Erdogans, PKR-Muslims, PKR-liberals-seculars, Indian-Muslims... etc). Whatever the reason is, PAS joining UMNO would be cheating. (froggies rule?). PAS joining Barisan Nasional to fight together for the next GE is however, not cheating. I don't really mind if Muslims in Malaysia really want to bond together because that is what Prophet Muhammad PBUH would want, since he detests Qabilah practice (Muslims having various groups) among the Muslims. However, this must only be done without the expense of the Non-Muslims because Prophet Muhammad encourages Muslim leaders to take good care of all citizens regardless of races. I know the Pakatan leaders have held a press conference rejecting a unity government, but, they can always discuss with Barisan Nasional on how to improve Malaysia for the benefits of the people.

On Tuan Guru Nik Aziz...

I have to agree with Mahathir when he said Tuan Guru is old and grumpy, like him! Although it could be contributed by the way PAS was so-called 'treated' many years ago (1970s when they joined Barisan), he forgot that Islam encourages people to forgive and forget. Depicting UMNO as communists and Sky Kingdom practices is somewhat shallow and of a sweeping statement. Worse, UMNO was once called kaffirs which really left a bad taste on people's perception of PAS, extreme and shouldn't be able to go well with liberals and seculars like DAP. Tuan Guru can accept ex-UMNO people (ie forgiven and forgotten of their past) like Anwar and many others in PKR (literally ex UMNO members and MPs) but not the current UMNO people although they had nothing to do with the 1970s issue. I guess it's because this is politics. He is againts the idea of a unity government, like Husam, because he doesn't want to see PAS under UMNO, worse than what he feels PAS's current position. Well, Nik Aziz is still human... derived from the word Insaan, that would mean Forgetful, in Arabic. So he made a mistake calling people names.. even Nasha was not spared, being emotionally shown to the door to join UMNO if Nasha was so interested about uniting the Muslims. Well, I am. So don't call me names if I want something better for the Muslims. In fact what are you so scared of? You can even expose UMNO wrong-doings when you are with Barisan in a party of your own!

On Chin Peng returning to Malaysia...

Man this one is so ridiculous even having to discuss it! Anwar seconded the motion (expectedly), because he simply wants to please people who support Communism/Socialism that made of some part of Pakatan Rakyat (shall I say DAP? SAPP?). I almost choked to death when some Malay guys on Facebook bravely saying how they welcome Chin Peng back home, obviously hardcore fans of Anwar Ibrahim. (monkey see, monkey do!). On calls for justice for gay people in Malaysia...

Oh please... you are in Malaysia, you live by its rules. You wanna change it, make your own party, win election and debate in the Parliament and see if it's gonna work in a traditional, Muslim-dominated country like Malaysia. Adultery, be it from the 'front' or from 'behind' is a crime in Malaysia. But I know the authority (cops) don't really catch people for adultery (hell yeah spas with prostitutes are everywhere in KL). The JAKIM snoop-cats however, are more interested with Muslims committing adultery. This is somewhat against the real teachings of Islam as Muslims are not allowed to search-and-catch, storm into properties, snoop around people committing sins (mencari-cari kesalahan orang lain adalah dosa besar). However, if by-chance that you are caught committing a crime, you should be punished. If one is committing a crime and a neighbour called the authority, that shouldn't be a problem, Islamically. But again, I am sure there are thousands of gay people in Malaysia (Western-culture-shocked, easily-influenced, emotional people - yeah don't blame God for it), they can live on with their lives as long as they don't get caught. I bet gay guys in Malaysia are mostly Malays. Wanna bet on that? I don't care really as long as you realise one day what you are doing is against any religion, unnatural, unhealthy and you don't establish a recruitment agency to lure others into your dungeon and thats fine really. On not punctual people...

I was really angry having to wait for 42 minutes for a couple of so-called educated, Raja Petra fans friends to treat them from my first pay. That was not the first time and on top of that, I was double booked for their friend from Portsmouth. (obviously if they are reading this, yeah screw them I had enough of being nice to KIDS). If you made a promise, I don't expect you to break it. If you are late, should have called or texted me earlier. I even gave 40 minutes of waiting time but thats probably the limit. In the 42nd minute, I just left for home from Leicester friggin Square. Saved me some bucks as well despite losing some 'friends'. I don't care I just hate being made a waiting toy!

On Arsenal new signing...

Fact: Thomas Vermaelen is shorter than Toure and Gallas by a centimeter. And we are having problems with the aerial defence at the back! Thank God for that. I expect more signings especially from the midfield. Strong, powerful, Vieira-like midfielder. A prolific towering striker like Dzeko wouldn't hurt as well after getting rid of that Ade-BAH-yor.

Mega-buys not the way. Clever buys are to stay.

Yup, the season's over. Now clubs in the Premier League are flexing their muscles in the summer transfer window with the likes of Manchester City and Portsmouth joining Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool with the mission to 'buy' trophies.

For me, it's a clear way of cheating when big clubs win all the titles with superior financial advantage. I am still waiting for the day when a small spending club clinches the title - in which will NEVER happen if the Big Clubs with Big Bucks continue financing their transfers with debts.

Maybe the FA should introduce the transfer-solvency mechanism where a club, which is debt-ridden, will have their transfer budget cap even though their assets indicate an ability to fully finance the debts.

It is cheating because the mid-table and poor from the wealthiest clubs table won't be able to fork out 32 million pounds for a world class player, and they will continue to be in mid table, or even relegated, being unable to outclass the big clubs with their home-grown youngsters.

The big four will continue to dominate unless billionaire-owners begin taking over many lowly clubs and challenge for the title.

Referring to Chelsea, it is clear the Club itself is in debt but with the backing of mega-rich Abramovic, he will continue to pump in money when ever which is needed. When he took over Chelsea, his own money was used. Man Utd however, is not the case when the takeover is financed by long term loan but they still continue to buy big like Dimitar Berbatov and potentially Carlos Teves even though their arch-rival City has claimed interest too.

Arsenal with their Emirates Stadium being their new source of gate receipts after leaving Higbury, has always wanted to work prudently. However, they took a gamble in which has paid off by securing a 300million pounds of loan to finance their new home. It has paid dividends thanks to their strict transfer policy and wage structure where only clever or 'boring' signings are made.

They have signed Andriy Arshavin in January for 15 Million pounds during which the sterling pounds was a lot weaker then. With his great start to his Arsenal career, it has proven that he is a worthwhile signing, a clever one if you may.

Chelsea, would have offered 30million pounds for Arshavin if they were keen for him, which I can say here, as silly money. This is a clear difference between both clubs.

The aim for Arsenal, just like other companies, is to make the company works in a going-concern basis and act prudently to stay in a financially sound position. Others, like Chelsea and Man City are being made as the big boys' toys - making Football Manager (the game) a reality, simply to show to the people that they have power and control of whatever they want.

If I were a billionaire myself, I would buy shares in Arsenal. I would take over the Arsenal NOT to show people what I got, but to seriously make Arsenal achieve things while making good decisions on its finance, so that I will stay longest in the Club. I am a fan of Football Manager as well but trust me, I only buy the youngsters and if I had to sell them in the future, I will make sure I make profits out of it.

What the Arsenal board is doing is somewhat in the interest of Arsene Wenger - buy intelligently. There may be some stupid buys like Franny Jeffers and Jose Reyes but at least they were not signed for about 25 million pounds (like Veron) or 30 million pounds (Shevchenko). Jose Reyes had a problem settling in London and as far as I am concerned, his so called 19million pounds signing were only settled in half, as Jose didn't achieve much during his stay at Arsenal. The track record has said it all. World-class players were made at Arsenal where they were virtually nobody before. Dennis Bergkamp was a flop in Inter, Henry was made to play on the left wing in Juventus, Patrick Vieira was a fringe youngster at Milan, Marc Overmars was badly injured when he signed from Ajax, Kanu was a forgotten man at Inter, Petit was a nobody in France and so were Clichy, Sagna, Toure and Adebayor. It's the Arsenal way to buy cheap and develop players to become world class stars.

Honestly, I am not sour about Man Utd's achievements for the past seasons, but if the likes of Everton, Aston Villa and Wigan can challenge for the title with the money they have, that would be better for the game, so that it won't be perceived as 'you can buy the title' game where about 4 billion fans out there cheering for the beauty of it, not ugly money.

On Penanti by-election...
Shouldn't be held at the first place. But Fairus the Misai Kucing Silat Ultraman felt betrayed but remains loyal with PKR. I mean, what is your problem? One even told me that Fairus had to do it to further his studies? Come on.. in what? Silat Cekak Penjejak Badai Tahap Qigong Meriam? You were selected by the people to serve them for a term. And the results shown as if there is no need for that by-election. Only 43% went out to vote? That's like the lowest ever! Apart from the by-elections triggered by deaths, other by-elections were unnecessary as well. It cost a lot of tax payer money and what a waste of time when evidently the results indicated the people remains loyal with the party won in the General Election 2008. What a load of rubbish.

On Guy Carpenter...
It's my 5th week now. Really happy with it. The people here are soo brilliant and it's different for me because the bosses actually sit near you. I can actually meet the SVPs because they are only 3 cubicles away. I got the corner lot where people past by every time they go for tea/coffee in the mini-canteen. Kantoi surfing Internet...

The future...
Depends really. Would hope to stay longer here. Qualify maybe? Definitely. 5 years here and 6 years with MNRB that sounds Alright as long as everything goes smooth with me.

The new house...
Still think its a bargain. I paid 375pounds per month for the Neasden house, 350 for the one at Park Court, 300 for Linacre Road I hardly occupied and now 460 for Scarborough St. I have got a double-bed room, with newly furbished shower room and toilets plus we got the new stove as well. Low point is I am actually sharing with unknowns but I'm quite click with one of them named Martin, who, ironically, was made redundant by Guy Carpenter earlier this year. Gulp! The distance to Tower Place? 7 minutes walk so no 100 quid monthly travel pass for me!

Food hunting...
Yeah went Shanghai Inn's Noodles (Halal), Bayswater the first time with Adrian, Arin and Amir (Arin's brother). Very nice the duck! I like! But the disappointment was for the dumplings.. tasteless. But will come again. And there is an Indian restaurant just round the corner of my house named Halal Restaurant. A lot better than Khan's. Good food, good service. Very polite. Got free dessert some more. After my last visit with Shukur from Malaysian Re, that could be my last.

Weekend football...
4 a side the first time I went with the likes of Arin, Amir, Amir, Amir, Yas, Zaid, fadhli and others.. If no people, we play Frisbee. Very weird the frisbee. But very fast.. travels so long. Got injured last weekend. Amir Abdillah was soo sweet to check out on my ankle the next day by calling. Budak baik ni! Haha. Unlucky je tak dapat masuk Final British Got Talent. (AMir, if you are reading this, jgn marah wei ko dah nak kawen kena control macho nanti bersanding. Haha).

Ok now I need to go solat Zuhur at Level 2. Yes, GuyCarp/Marsh ada bilik solat! Woohoo!

The English Premier League 2008/09

I wanted Liverpool to win the championship. I know, coming from a Gooner I shouldn't be rooting for the Scousers. It was simply because of how I hate Man Utd winning the league season after season. Sadly, the Merseysiders blew their chance of any silverware (again, same goes to Arsenal) after drawing with so many lowly clubs.

On a higher note, United failed to get their so called "Quintuple Champions" status, ended up with as "shit Treble winners" after winning the league and collecting the uncompetitive World Club Cup and the League Cup (where Arsenal only fielded their reserve team). Before you say anything, as you can see from my season preview I never said Arsenal is going to win something this season... but "Quintuple" sounds a bit more like Mel Gibson and his octoplets-fatherhood brag while losing half of his fortune dumping his wife in the process after claiming his new girlfriend is expecting his 8th child.

Come on Mel. If Gene Simmons doesn't use the condoms, he could have fathered the many children of 100+ women he slept with.

And now Man Utd had to settle for the cheap treble. In my books, they can be respected for retaining the title for the 3rd time but you can now see their achievement has declined from last season. New champions next season? Well, hopefully. Maybe some new contenders as well from the likes of Manchester City, Everton and even Portsmouth which is currently linked with a takeover bid from Sulaiman Al Fahim.

Sulaiman must have been a keen admirer of British football. The TV revenues is something he can pounce on with his deep pocket investment. Maybe its the crescent on Pompey's badge that he could seek luck from.

Oops I forgot to mention I feel sorry for Newcastle Utd fans out there.. especially Nik and Haniz. Just hope and pray that The Looney Toons won't do a Leeds.

Amazing Race Season 14

What a finale! I was rooting for Margie and Luke since the start but Tammy and Victor became stronger and stronger after their fall out earlier in the episodes to win the 1 Million dollars. The team had an advantage of being able to speak Mandarin for the final rounds in China before jetting to Hawaii. Keisha and Jen made a boob by stopping at the WC at the wrong time and blew their chance to be in the final three where Jaime (woohoo) and Cara pipped them to the final round. Margie and Luke (who could have been the first deaf contestant to win The Amazing Race) were leading in the final round but Luke was nervous with the final two surfboards indicating the task for each last two rounds but he completely forgotten about it. How can he forgot what happened the day before that really puzzles me until now. Well the best team won.

Hell's Kitchen USA Season 5

Danny is a cocky bastard. But he is indeed a great chef. I thought Paula was going to win it but as I saw the door handles (with Danny's slightly leveled than Paula's) I knew Dan's going to win it. It was simply unfortunate as it was so clear that Danny's restaurant was soo ugly with the fake fishes hanging on the walls compared to Paula's glam decor. I guess it's true it's all about the quality of the food. William's Kedai Haram Tepi Jalan and Sri Murni proved that as well. Come on, even the smell of the drain and higher prices can't deter the customers flocking for William's carbonara pasta and nasik goreng ketam.

British Got Talent

I had no favourites. I enjoy watching the auditions as usual but when I saw the final, I predicted the top 3 would be Diversity, Susan Boyle and Julian Smith. Well it was an accurate prediction but it was quite like a give away judging at the final performances of the contestants. Aidan didn't perform as good as the night before though he was one of the favourites. Susan gave her all but the recent media sort of like portraying her having a bad start riding with Big Boys. Shaheen was alright but it was probably because he didn't improve that much through time that saw him lose out even in the top 3.

Prison Break Finale

Very moving. I've been watching the series since it began and watching your hero die to save his beloved ones made you ponder about the real purpose of life.
